Want to Shed Hunt

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I would like to try shed hunting with my 6 year old son. He is fascinated by this kind of stuff. When is the best time to go? I would think it is easier to find elk sheds since there are more elk and they are bigger. Any tips/hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Elk will start dropping in a couple weeks and deer after that...

Elk - End of February to the Beginning of May, Majority drop March-April

Deer - depends on where your at April - June

There are always exception to this though, I have seen Hard horned spikes in June before when bigger bulls are already sprouting branched antlers

There is never a bad time to go shed hunting... Antlers on the ground 24-7 / 365 days a year... and if u don't find any, OHH well... I'm sure u and your son will have a great time anyhow :D . Best of wishes, & when u do find umm, they will be souveniers that ensure u won't forget the days memories being in the woods with your boy, Have FUN!

This is a horn I found on fathers day last year right off the highway.

Thanks for all your replies. Yeah, just time spent with my son in the wilderness is a good day for me. I am 31 and started hunting at about 26. I have never filled a tag (deer or elk). He is starting to get mad when I come home with nothing. We went to the Tucson Gem show last week and I bought him a nice deer antler. I would love to find a shed one of these days. I guess mide March we will head up North to try to spot some. I'm assuming the best place to go would be the White Mountains area?

Thanks again,

I'd like to take a moment to ask everyone not to run all the bulls out the country before they have dropped..... Mid-march is plenty early... there will be enough to go around you don't have to the very first guy in the forest tromping around pushing elk! ;)

Two years ago, I had a gobbler coming to me when two guys hunting sheds drove past and spooked the bird. Why not wait until after the turkey hunts?

No way C n S.....I got some special boots and there guaranteed to make me as fast as an elk, those babies should compensate for the extra weiht of the armor i must wear to actully get the antler from the elk :D :P JK I'll probly still be too slow :(

New AZ- You could go into the White Mountains and not find a thing and then drive up the 87th North and find a NICE One. They are everywhere, and every season you will see pics of people who find the HUGE Old White Sheds that are sitting out there right now while I type this. I hiked alot of country last year searching and then my Buddy was taking his kids to the lake. They stop for a RR break and right by the dirt road his son finds a MONSTER ELK shed, bigger than all of the ones I found. So it's alot of luck. Since your lil one will be along maybe just walking Fence Lines would be a good start, there are always a few lying next to those. If you go to late I would try to go where the ATV's can't get, as the fat people on ATV's start to cover ALOT of country. Wait, I think I hear them out the window right now

Like the others said you will find lots of other stuff, feathers, bones, skulls, tracks, scat and other stuff that will blow his mind. If you head to ELk country than he will probably get to see some ELK if he's quiet and that should blow his mind too.

See you on the trail
