draggingnuts Report post Posted February 5, 2011 Ok I have some traps set up but one set I have caught 2 rabbits and while the rabbit is caught in the foot trap a bobcat is eating part of it and then burrying the rest not too far from my set. I have never set a trap for anything, but it seems to me that you have this bobcat conditioned to find and eat rabbits at this site. Why not try hanging a dead rabbit above your trap, say 36 inches or so above the ground, or whatever you estimate is just high enough that the cat would have to stretch to get it? Hyperwrx Report post Posted February 8, 2011 It is illegal to place your foothold trap adjacent to a recent kill intentionally. Raptors often become the targets if your trap resides next to a recent kill. Also with confinement traps putting a dead rabbit in the cage to lure the bobcat in is also against regulations. Do not get discouraged as you at least have bobcats in the immediate area. They end up in your trap inevitability. Are you using a gland based lure? It's almost breeding time and the males are on the prowl. Get some Briarpatch Bobcat gland lure or Grahams (there are a ton of them available) and entice the bobcat to step on that pan. Good luck. eldiablo Report post Posted April 13, 2011 If you're using a leg hold trap (private land I presume), you have the pan tension set too low if you are catching rabbits. If you set it at 3-3.5 pounds it will cut way down on your non-target catches. Sounds like a good spot though! As Hyperwrx said, if you were caging, you couldn't use a game animal as bait - but you could use a jackrabbit. Some thoughts for next year. Good luck. arizonaelitefreak Report post Posted April 16, 2011 use a double set set the one trap where rabbits are getting into your set and then set another one on the cats path into eat the rabbit thats what a freind of mine does on the res when trapping, lots of double sets! Coach Report post Posted April 16, 2011 Knowing nothing about the trapping laws in AZ, I remember my cousin in Oklahoma used to catch bobcats by digging a hole, putting a dead bird down the hole and placing the trap over the hole (mostly buried in sand in a wash bottom). Smart cats would dig around the trap, but you could put some flat rocks around it. He caught a lot of them. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
