Hooked on Hunting

Recommended Posts

I am fairly new to big game hunting. Just started in 2007 when I was drawn for Rifle Elk. On opening morning at day break I had a choice of 3 bulls and was able to take the big 6x6. I could not believe the adrenaline rush. I was hooked and of course with our lottery system I cant seem to get drawn again. I recently started taking up archery and went Javeline and Mule Deer hunting for the first time.

I was able to get my first Javelina and what a good time.

On my deer hunt, I have been very lucky and have seen deer every time I have been out but have not been successful on the stalk. On my second to last day of the hunting season I was able to get close enough to take a shot at a nice wide 2x2 who was bedded down due to the high winds. Not knowing about angles I ranged the doe who was with the buck at about 50 yards as the buck was about 5 yards behind. Again, my heart was pumping and I neglected to range the buck and put my 50 yard pin on him and let it go. I watched that arrow go right over his back.

On my last day I glassed a nice 4x4 at about 230 yards walking right at me. Unfortunately he made an immediate U turn and met up with some does on another hill and was never able to close the distance.

Although i will be putting in for rifle deer come season, I have to say Archery is a major rush.

I can't wait to get my first Deer.

Welcome to the club, Geno. Hunting is neither a sport nor an avocation; it is an obsession that is planted deep within our genes. Although you obviously are one of us, it just took you longer than most to realize it.

Thanks guys, and you are right it is an Obsession. Luckily my wife is supportive of my addiction and sometimes goes with me. Its nice to have another set of eyes when the buddies cant make it out.

Feels good to be one of you.
