DEERSLAM Report post Posted November 22, 2005 Jack that's a great buck, looks to me like he should make the B&C Awards program atleast Your bud didn't do to shabby either. Congrats to both of you. On a side note, hope I'm not putting my foot in my mouth, but your rifle in the photo needs to be pointed in a safe direction. Please don't take this personal. JACK Report post Posted November 23, 2005 HEY EVERYBODY THANKS WERE HUNTING 35B MY BUCK GROSSES 110 2/8" AND NETS ?????????? WHO CARES NETS ARE 4 FISH I DID A TON OF SCOUTING AND HAD A NON TYPICAL 120" CLASS BUCK LOCATED AND HE WAS HANGIN WITH TWO OTHER BUCKS IN THE 105"-110". I WAS SO EXCITED BECAUSE LAST YEAR WE DID NOT SEE A SOUL IN THIS SPOT AND I HAD NOT SEEN A PERSON WHILE SCOUTING. DAVE WASN'T PLANNIN ON COMING DOWN UNTIL THE SECOND WEEKEND SO I WENT BY MYSELF THE FIRST WEEKEND. I LEFT PRESCOTT AT 2:OOAM FRIDAY MORNING. I GOT DOWN TO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS KINDA A "SECRET SPOT" AND THERE WAS A LITTLE CITY, I WAS SO BUMMED. I WENT TO MY GLASSIN SPOT,SAT IN WIND, HEARD SOME SHOOTIN, SAW SOME DEER, SAT IN THE WIND SOME MORE, GOT TIRED OF THE WIND AND HEADED FOR THE TRUCK. AS I DROVE OUT THERE WAS A CAMP WITH A DEER HANGIN SO I STOPPED TO CHAT AND THEY HAD SHOT ONE OF THE BIG BUCKS AMIGOS. THE GUY WAS JUST WALKIN AROUND THE DEER JUMPED UP AND HE SHOT HIM, THEN AN ALOT BIGGER ONE JUMPED UP RAN OFF. HE SAID HE DIDNT KNOW THESE DEER GOT THIS BIG OF HORNS. HE DOSEN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HE HAS. THAT BUCK WAS PRETTY AWSOME 4X3 WITH 4" EYE GAURDS AND UNBELIVABLE MASS 110" CLASS FOR SURE. CONGRATS TO HIM! THEY HAD THREE TAGS LEFT IN CAMP AND THEY WERE GOING AFTER THE OTHER ONE. NOW I WAS REALLY BUMMED I KNEW THE BIG GUY WAS STILL ALIVE BUT ALL THESE GUYS WERE GOING AFTER HIM, SO I DECIDED TO LEAVE. SO, DAVE CAME DOWN, WE HEADED OUT, IT WAS STILL WINDY WHEN WE GOT DOWN THERE AND THE MOON WAS PRETTY DANG FULL PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR HUNTIN RIGHT?? SO THURSDAY WE WENT BACK TO THE "SECRET SPOT" AND THE WIND WAS BLOIWIN HARDER AND WE HAD THE WHOLE PLACE TO OURSELVES FOR A FEW MINUTES.THEN WHAT DO YOU KNOW THE THREE GUYS SHOW BACK UP, WAVE, AND WALK BY. I LEFT AGAIN. WE WENT BACK TO CAMP THEN DECIDED TO HUNT A SPOT WHERE WE SAW ALOT OF DEER LAST YEAR, AND IT WAS WINDY THERE TOO, WE ONLY SAW A FEW DOES AND FEWER PEOPLE. FRIDAY MORNING IT WINDY,WE SAW A DOE,FRIDAY NIGHT WE SAT OVER A TANK AND WATCHED THE WAVES, BUT AS SOON AS THE SUN WENT DOWN IT TOOK THE WIND WITH IT AND FOUR DOES CAME IN. WE HAD BEEN HUNTING FOR TWO DAYS AND HAD NOT SEEN ANY BONE I WAS AGRAVATED TO SAY THE LEAST. FRIDAY NIGHT SOME REENFORCEMENTS ARRIVED MY DAD AND TWO BUDDIES SHOWED UP TO HELP. SATURDAY MORNING WE DEVISED OUR SELF A PLAN ,SPREAD OUT AND FIND THE DANG DEER! MY DAD AND DAVE WERE GOING TO LOOK LOW AND WE WERE GOING HIGH. I WAS JUST HAPPY BECAUSE THE WIND DIED TO A SLIGHT BREEZE. WE HIKED UP TO A HIGH RIDGE WHERE WE COULD GLASS A TON OF COUNTRY MY TWO BUDDIES LOOKED TO THE NORTH AND I WENT OVER AND LOOKED SOUTH IT WAS PRETTY SLIM PICKINS BUT I JUST KEPT GLASSIN ABOUT AN HOUR LATER I SAW MY BUCK COMING OUT OF A CANYON BELOW ME. HE WAS SO AWSOME THERE WAS NO DOUBT HE WAS A SHOOTER I WATCHED HIM FOR A MINUTE THEN RAN OVER TO GET MY BUDDIES AND WHEN WEGOT BACK I COULDN'T FIND HIM, PANIC, THEN I SAW HIM RUNNING ACROSS THE MOUNTIAN, GREAT, I GUESS WE SPOOKED HIM, HE WAS HEADED DOWN TO THE BOTTOM, AND HE WAS GONE, OUTTA MY LIFE, FOREVER............THEN HE RUNS UP OUT OF THE BOTTOM STOPS AND LAYS DOWN!!!! FROM RUNNING TO LAYING DOWN IN SECONDS. HE KNEW SOMETHING WAS UP BUT DIDN'T KNOW WHERE WE WERE. LITTLE DID HE KNOW WE WERE 535 YARDS AWAY, AND HE WAS IN PLAIN SIGHT. WE DISCUSSED A STALK BUT THERE WAS REALLY NO WAY TO GET MUCH CLOSER WITHOUT SPOOKING HIM. I SHOOT A 300 ULTRA MAG AND IT IS ONLY 15" LOW AT 500 YARDS SO I DECIDED TO SHOOT FROM WHERE WE WERE . WHEN I SHOT I LOST HIM DUE TO A LITTLE RECOIL BUT I HEARD THE BULLET WHOOP AND MY BUDDIES STARTED YELLIN. I KNEW IT WAS ALL OVER, EXCEPT FOR ALL THE WORK, HE WAS NOT IN A USER FRIENDLY SPOT .I DONT KNOW IF I HAVE EVER BEEN ON SUCH A STEEP SLOPE, BUT WE GOTTER DONE. WHEN WE GOT BACK TO THE TRUCK MY DAD AND DAVE WEREN'T BACK YET SO WE HUNG OUT FOR A BIT. I WALKED UP ON LITTLE RIDGE WHERE WE WERE PARKED TO SEE IF I COULD SEE THEM,AND I SAW THEM, THEY WERE DOWN THE RIDGE WAVING THEIR HAND LIKE MAD TELLING ME TO GET THE heck OUT THERE. I SNUCK AROUD TO WHERE THEY WERE AND THEY HAD A BUCK BEDDED DOWN. I WAS ONLY ABOUT 150 YARDS FROM THE BUCK AT ONE POINT. I ALMOST BLEW IT FOR DAVE. WE MOVED AROUND SO DAVE COULD GET A GOOD SHOT. AT 385 YARDS HE MADE AN AWSOME SHOT THE BUCK NEVER EVEN MOVED HE GOT HIS FIRST COUES, I DONT THINK IT WILL BE HIS LAST.

bchoitz Report post Posted November 23, 2005 Jack, Nice buck, and good story. I share your frustration with other hunters being in that "secret" spot. It is so hard to know where others will hunt until the actual season opens. It would appear that you rebounded from the blow fairly well. If you don't mind my asking, what portion of the unit were you in? From the pictures, it appears you are in the western portion of the unit, in the desert portion between Providencia and Cumero canyons? That is where I plan to start my hunt in December. You guys have me so excited to go! I can hardly wait! Only 3 more weeks! Bret
