CouesKiller.300 Report post Posted February 5, 2011 The rest of the story is that since I ended up going by myself my wife required me to take my good for nothing bluetick to keep me company and safe... anyway I checked out some of my favorite areas wednesday evening and was very disappointed because all I saw were a handfull of doe and not even a spike. Thursday morning I woke up after hitting snooze half a dozen times, the sun was already begining to come up but it was no problem because I was in the middle of some of the best coues country in the state. I arrived at the point I decided to glass at about 10am and by 10:30 I saw deer. I woke up sick and I was ready to shoot the first thing I saw. it was a herd of 8 doe and pulling up the rear was a 90-95in 3point so I was shootin. well they were 400yds and movin so I ended up empty and continued to glass. around 11:30 I saw a few doe but no buck so I continued to wear out the ole swaro's and about an hour later I began to hear something. I began looking around first through the binos then with just my naked eye and all of a sudden I saw him step out from behing a bush and he began to rub his antlers on the tree. I knew he was big enough so I had to tell myself not to screw up again. the deer began walking towards me and when he was about 50yds I let a bullet rip from my .300 win mag and the deer just curled up. I was stoked but its hard to espress it when no one is with you and you have no phone service!! I walked up to him and saw just what I had done. I couldnt believe the antlers on this thing. so I took care of him and ended up making two trips to get him out that totaled just over 20mi. The stuff on his antlers is left over velvet that he did not get polished off. when we put a tape to him he scored right around 112-113. What a great hunt I had, I packed it up after just one day and headed home and to the doctor. thanks everyone for your comments.

CouesKiller.300 Report post Posted February 10, 2011 So I changed my title because after checking out the post creed_az_88 made hes right. I ran into Steven the morning I killed this buck. the videos are the best way to tell that its him. Mason I tried to get Ryan to go but he "had to work"... typical excuse!! thanks everyone for your comments. Ill have to have Clay get me an official score on him after the 60 day drying period. And Steven will have to verify the area to know if it is actually Cedro mattman informed me it is illegal to hunt deer with a dog in the field. I was unaware of this but the dog never left the truck. I went on a backpacking day trip while he remained tied to the truck. thanks for the info mattman.
Tines Report post Posted February 11, 2011 Man! Congrats on a great buck! "Illegal to hunt with a dog"? Never heard of that one. I have heard that its illegal to hunt deer with the AID if dogs. But hey, I've been wrong before and don't have a dog to worry about it. Congrats again!
Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted February 11, 2011 Congrats on a Great buck and one heck of a story! FYI: It is not illegal to have a dog with you while hunting. Harrassing or hunting with the aid of dogs is something different. My Heelers are always with me at work and in the woods...my Zip dog has been on every hunt I have for several years now and every day I am in the woods he is with me, he is my Huntin' Pard....and it's a free country. Cheers!
MattMan Report post Posted February 12, 2011 I just gave him a heads up that it's illegal for a dog to aid in the pursuit of deer. Interpretation of whether or not your dog is aiding in pursuit, if you took him into the field with you during an open deer hunt, would be subject to the interpretation of the unit manager... and the results obtained may vary depending on the unit manager involved. You pays your money and you makes your choice... I'd hate to lose a hog buck like he has in this thread because of the interpretation of a unit manager, so choose to leave Fido in the truck, at camp, or home during hunts in which dogs are not allowed. No... there is very little left to interpretation. Either your dog aided in the taking of game or it didn't.... either it harrassed game while you were hunting, or it didn't. Why live in a world of fear... enjoy your time outdoors and stay with in the rules... simple. The Law/rule states very simply that it is illegal to use a dog to TAKE big game (other than lion & fall bear). It says nothing of being in the company of a dog while hunting.... if you use your dog like a bird dog and jump game and shoot it... well then you have a problem. Until then don't scare a guy into thinkin' he can't take his dog to woods with him. Especially for a guy who goes to the woods a lot alone (and doesn't hear well, like me) it is nice to know you got someone watching your back. Cheers and once again Congrats on the buck! Lots of folks talking about it!
