collared dove cross breeding?

Recommended Posts

Took these pics last week. the collard dove on the right looked like a cross breed to me. Darker color, beak shaped a little different, head different, tail looked like a morning dove.

Well I just watched a collard dove chase down and mount a morning dove. He did it to 3 different doves...

Very interesting observation. I wonder what the biologists on here have to say. We must have someone who specializes in birds. I'd be interested in knowing if they are genetically close enough to reproduce and, if so, would the offspring be able to reproduce, i.e. would they be sterile, like mules.

Well if someone wants it to study/test, better let me know quick... I dusted off the ol slingshot and the crockpot is waiting. There are about 20 of them collared doves that hit my yard in the afternoon. I could also catch it alive if needed.....
