Minimum Cal for Coues (youth)

Recommended Posts

redman, look at the remington model 7 stainless/synthetic in 7mm-08. this is the rifle my dad and i are looking at for my brother. its is 579 and a beautiful little gun. this way, if the decides he doesnt like it, you have a awesome little pee shooter! he can also use it on elk under 300 yards!

get em a .243.  great cartridge.  shoots hard, soft recoil.  when you're shooting a .22 cal centerfire with heavier bullets, like the 65 and 70 grain, remember that a lot of them don't have a fast enough twist to stabilize the long bullet.  a .243 with 85 or 100 grain bullets will do in any deer in Az.  load up 60's or 75's and have a great coyote gun too.  Lark.

????? did i read this right? Lark with A. positive words on anything else than a .270? and B. recomending a different gun than a 270??? WEIRD!!!!

My boy was 8 when I let him start shooting my 22-250 with 55 gr bullets and he never complained about the recoil and the little dude was a dang good shot. I have shot 2 deer with the 22-250 both at over 200 yards and both dropped immediately. AG

I love my .243. I would think that a .223 would be a good choice too.

You can get rounds for the .243 that are really light. You can also get rounds that have a bit more kick too. I think the .243 would be a good gun for him to grow into.

Me and my wife have shot so many things with the .243 it isn't even funny. Mulies, couse, eastern white tails, elk, axis deer, pigs, ect. That round has really impressed me. I've got a walmart .243 adl in black with a synthetic stock. I think they cost a little under 400 and are worth every penny.
