Afternoon quail spot

Recommended Posts

So this might sound like a desperate plea...

For starters, this was my first season for hunting quail. being new and inexperienced i only got a few to show for it through out the season. (i didnt go out my first time till thanksgiving weekend.) I immidiately fell in love with it. I like being outdoors (like everyone else here) and i used each outing for quail as new adventure.

I came back after my nearly 6 trips, with only 3 quail (total, yeah i know...pathetic). To make matters worse i always came back to my girlfriend who would ask, "and this is fun for you?, why do you want me to go with if you cant find anything?".

Finally this past weekend (i had MLK day off and came back empty handed)... she said she wants to shoot the shotgun. (she is an avid hand-gunner, and a dang good shot... my own verison of "Annie Oakley") Does anyone know of a good mid day/afternoon spot for quail? I would love to take her out and let her experience the fun of going for quail, and the enjoyment of some success along with that.

She works 2nd's sometimes into 3rd shift...so going out early in the morning wont work for her (it might be when she's finally coming home from work, and for my safety... she needs some sleep ha ha). I also know that its the tail end of a relatively bad season for quail. Shes been out for javelina and wants to do elk next season with me... i was just hoping to introduce her into the fine art of Quailing.

Where do you live? Someone might wish to PM a spot or two to try close to you. This time of season, you may hear more calling. Use of the wooden Lohman call may incite some responses to give their locatoion away.

mbiewer, welcome to cwt.com site. You will find this site to be very helpful. What type of quail have you been hunting and what region of our state? Coming home with 3 quail isn't a bad day afield. I came home with 1 the other day and was happy to get that. Glad to see your girlfriend wants to get out and give it a try. This is a great time to be in the field with our awesome weather. Once again welcome and good hunting. :)

Sorry, i live in chandler.

I have primarily been going out for quail in 37 b (out by the 96 ranch area). Kinda been doubling up and scouting for javelina at the same time. One trip out was out towards gold canyon.

It has been 3 quail total for the season, and it took me 6 trips to get those. ha ha. Im happy with "one-zies and two-zies" also, but it would be awesome to introduce her with a high success rate.

thanks for the warm welcome to the site.
