Another great time in Mexico

Recommended Posts

I just got back from a week long hunt in Sonora. The weather was good and the hunting was great. The ranch owner was perfect and made everyone feel at home. I am used to roughing it and camping out of my tent so a ranch house with beds and shower was very welcome. The ranch had different kinds of terrain but coues could be found anywhere from the desert floor all the way to the tops of many mountains there.

The first day after we arrived I set out early. I made a big hike from out in the flats to a big ridge. Sometime in the afternoon I was dropping down to cross a saddle to get to what looked like a good glassing point when I saw a deers ear move in the brush. I pulled up my rifle and when I looked through the scope I could see the g3s where longer then the g2s and looked like a good buck... SO I SHOT HIM ... That just seemed to make him want to run so I shot him 3 more times. Luckily the last shot piled him up before he could jump off the cliff he was headed to.

I caped and quartered him out and loaded my pack for the long hike back. I dropped off into the next canyon and had deer flagging in front of me. I heard some rocks move below me and 40 yards down was a buck way bigger then I had just shot. I had told myself to hold out for the BIG ones but once again I had shot the first good buck I saw. I have what CHEF calls a bad case of couesenitus. Hector is a great guy to have in your camp. The whole gang of us there had a great time and got along good with each other.

Well now I'm tagged out but got to go and glass and try to help the others. I was able to find a neat buck for Mike and he killed his biggest coues so far. Hector and Rocky also tagged out while I was there. Phil and Jim are still holding out and have passed on some great bucks.

Justo, the ranch owner, and his son were there everyday and I can't say enough about there hospitality and great food. The only negative thing about the whole hunt was when crossing back into the USA I had to give up my cape because there were 2 ticks on it.

For any of you going down and bringing back your cape please check and recheck your capes. I went over mine before I froze it and again afterwards with a fine tooth comb. I was confident it was tick free, but at the border I could plainly see the 2 ticks so the blame is on me.

Here are some other pics.

Good luck and good hunting to all of you.

Congratulations again on a great buck Keven. It was an absolute blast down there and I can't wait to do it again next year. I am still downloading pictures and getting unpacked and once I do I'll post up some video and more pictures. Thanks for coming along and all your help glassing and caping the bucks. It is so nice to have good quality people such as yourself on a hunt.

Another picture of Keven's buck.

Kevin!

Great job on a fine buck man! That "Couesenitis" is hard to cure! I suffer from it BAD as well!

I can't say enough great things about you and sharing camp with you down in Mexico.

I know we'll share some laughs once again real soon.

I still can't believe you lost your buck at the border!

I ended up giving mine to Justo JR for a buck he had shot years back.

If you couldn't get it clean enough, I knew they wouldn't pass mine, so I didn't want it to go to waste.

Great job on the write up and I can't wait to see your mount when you are finished with him.

I too am unpacking and downloading pics/vids and should have my story up here real soon.

Great time with great hosts and hunting partners. Doesn't get much better.
