azgutpile Report post Posted January 20, 2011 Since these aren't foot hold traps, does this mean that you can trap on public land?
coues7 Report post Posted January 20, 2011 azgutpile that is correct. Josh what bait sets are you using? Are you using Bob's lures? If so which one?

Hyperwrx Report post Posted January 20, 2011 azgutpile that is correct. Josh what bait sets are you using? Are you using Bob's lures? If so which one? Josh and I both use Briarpatch Lures. In the back of the cage I put some bobcat gland lure. I also put in some stubtail call. In a tree above the cage I put desert call. Its stronger and carries the scent better. I have a few other bobcat gland based lures I use peridically.

coues7 Report post Posted January 26, 2011 Josh are you covering the bottom of your traps with dirt? Those are some gorgeous spots on that cat! What were you using for your flagging? It looks like faux fur or the skin off some animal.
josh Report post Posted January 26, 2011 I do cover the bottoms but the cats try digging and expose alot of the wire. I also put dirt on my pans. Dont worry about dirt on cage behind pan.I use faux fur in some of my sets. But most are scent only. How is your trapping going up north?

coues7 Report post Posted January 27, 2011 I've had my cages out for a since last Friday......nothin' yet. In all honestly I'm getting discouraged. I was super duper hopeful in the beginning......I'm wishing I had a good mentor. If I can simply catch a couple of cats and re-coupe some of my money I'll buy traps from either Bob or Mercer. I'm currently using borrowed traps with the drop doors (non-guillotine). I put cotton balls with coyote/bobcat urine on them hanging at the back of the cage. Because I'm volcanic areas it's hard to find dirt to put in the bottom of the cage. Right now I just pulled some grass off and scattered that inside the cage. I then squirted a little urine on the outside of the cage. I did kind of put some sticks around the outside of the cage similar to you and Scotty's setups. I wonder what I'm doing wrong but at the same time it just may take some time I'm on all private right now. I'm thinking about moving to an area closer to town. It currently takes me 2 hours to check 4 traps. The other discouraging thing is I've found cat scat on the roads leading in (out in the flats) but not where I put my traps (in the rock bluffs). I have some lure ordered and it should be hear by Monday. I also expected to see more Jacks on the way in/out but I haven't seen any. Since those aren't "game animals" I would like to put a dead one in the cage or at least the ears hanging. I'm currently trying to find some chicken wings for "flagging". right now I just put up Christmas tinsel on a swivel. Scott
catclaw Report post Posted January 27, 2011 I also have not had anyone mess with my cages but right now I have them set adjacent to some horse tails that go into some nice washes. I am crossing my fingers. Bobcats getting bigger and bigger each day. Todays was about 45 pounds and smelled real bad. I told you they have 40 pounders!!! coues7 Report post Posted January 27, 2011 A friend of mine shot a bobcat over on Mt. Graham that was weighted by a taxidermist at 42 lbs. This guys 6'3" and when he held it straight at shoulder height it touched the ground.....the taxidermist couldn't believe it.
Hyperwrx Report post Posted January 27, 2011 A friend of mine shot a bobcat over on Mt. Graham that was weighted by a taxidermist at 42 lbs. This guys 6'3" and when he held it straight at shoulder height it touched the ground.....the taxidermist couldn't believe it. Neither should you. There is no 40 pound bobcat in the state of Arizona unless it was eating big rocks. There are misconceptions on bobcat size just like we read about all other big game. People exaggerate. You'd be surprise how little a bobcat weighs even when it looks and feels like a big toad. The average AZ bobcat is between 16-20 pounds. I have never even seen proof of a 30 pound bobcat (scale and bobcat in the same picture). Bobcats get larger the further you go North in the continental US. Get up near Canada and they'll be in the early 30's. Concerning your cages and your discouragement. I hear ya. To catch bobcats you got to be in bobcats. Josh is in a great area as there are tons of bobcats. At that point Josh follows a series of techniques and the odds are in his favor he'll lure them into his cage. It's trail and error. Try something new and pitch it if you don't get results. A good trapper tries finding a pattern and then he runs with it. Josh has found a superb area and has gotten into a good pattern. He's catching a bobcat every 2 days on average over the past 3 weeks. You can't deny he has #1- You need more than urine. Get some serious bobcat gland based lure like Bobs or Graham's. Dip a stick in it and throw it in the back of the cage. A line of urine down the cage and out the door is about all Josh and I use. #2- Get in an area where you can cover up the bottoms of your pan and cage bottom with dirt or some other media. I think the odds go up dramatically when your cage looks more natural. #3 Set your taps closer together. I had 13 traps in a 3 mile stretch of road. #4- Use a dangler of some sort in the back of your cages. Faux fur or some non-game animal fur or feathers.
