db cooper Report post Posted January 10, 2011 Hey all, My kids and I would like to find some elk sheds but only have experiance looking for deer antlers. Can anyone point out a good general area and time to start? What elevation should we focus on? We don't mind walking and only want a couple for the wall, so they can brag about finding them. Thanks in advance.
Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted January 11, 2011 Do some research and look for wintering grounds, where the elk hang out during the time when antlers start falling.........plus there is probably some migrating that occurs during that process. Elevation can be misleading. Antler hot spots are like favorite fishing and hunting holes, nobody wants to air them out over the world wide web but if you look where the elk are you shall surely find anlters. Good luck in your search..........
Red Rabbit Report post Posted January 11, 2011 Some larger bulls may drop at the end of Feb, but I figure the peak may be the first part of April for most bulls. If there is not a lot of snow, they may be scattered and back up above the rim/summer range by the time they drop. There was a bull hit on I-17 north of Munds Park a few days ago. If there is a lot of snow, don't chase them around, scatter them, and stress them on the winter range. Many like to walk fencelines as elk use them as walkways and may lose an antler when they jump over. Some like to look in the open feeding areas where they are at night and some like to look in the thick bedding areas that they may lose on the trees. Basically, they are where they are. Keep the atvs on the roads.
