San Carlos Deer Hunt

Recommended Posts

This was the best hunt we've had in a long time when it comes to the rut. The first two days of the hunt, which was Saturday and Sunday, the deer were FIRED up! The bucks were chasing does from sun up to sun down. Of course it probably helped that the temperature never got over 35 degrees for those two days.

During those first 2 days we glassed up at least 10 different bucks each day. After that the temps started to rise and the deer slowed down a little bit but it was still good hunting.

This was a buck we found within the first hour of glassing. He was so excited he just kept chasing the hot doe in circles on the mountain.

This mountain had a lot of deer on it.

I glassed up this small 3 point sound a sleep on the side of a mountain.

Found this buck in some lower country with a couple does.

I shot my buck above the clump of trees in between the binocs and rifle. He had 2 feeding does with him. This was the first time I had used the "claw" and it was great.

He started out as a 3 by 3 but ended up as a 3 by 2. After the first shot the deer hunched up and dove forward behind a juniper tree. I waited for 30 minutes before heading up the mountain feeling sure that he was done. Well..........when I got to where I had shot the buck and was standing there looking at the blood trail I heard something. It was the buck getting up from underneath a tree above me. The shot had gone into the low shoulder and into the brisket but he took off on his 3 good legs. He was headed around the edge of the mountain so I went to throwing lead. The first shot was high and took the point off his right side. The next shot caught him behind the ribs and went forward to the opposite shoulder folding him up.

Congrats on the success Mitch!

Did you happen to find any pieces of his rack? Either way, a taxi should be able to fix him up for you.

Also, you need to look into the Outdoorsmans bino adapter for your leicas.
