.270 Report post Posted December 30, 2010 so what's the deal? a couple months ago everbody was whinin' about we was gonna burn up. now we're gonna freeze. this is an interesting article. granted, we've only got about 2 weeks of winter measured up so far, but it has been a cold sob across the north of north America and europe. read this. http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/16957...-in-1000-years/ i read a deal the other day about a prediction that a couple guys came up with. and these guys are the best at predicting the weather that there is. you don't hear much about em because they don't buy into this global warming crap. anyway, they say that the northern half of the northern hemisphere is going to go into a mini ice age in the next 50 years or so. i don't get it? record cold. record snow fall. but it's caused by global warming? i know one thing, i'm gonna be wantin' some o' that warmin' up stuff in nova scotia. oooo, i'm already gettin' a chill. study up this stuff guys, because it is the next big money grab comin' down road from dc. these guys like gore and all these other bastards have figgerd out a way to make money off it. and you get to pay for it. they ain't gonna quit making electricity. they ain't gonna quit making gas and diesel. all they're gonna do is raise the price and you get to pay for it. don't be a frog in boilin' pot. get interested and get informed. 308Nut Report post Posted December 30, 2010 My opinion (key word being opinions so take this with a grain of salt) is that even though things may be heating up, this can cause cold bad weather. A hotter apmosphere causes warmer oceans which cause bad weather. Sometimes that bad weather equals cold weather. Besides, as ice melts it has to go somewhere. Much of the extra ocean water may evaporate and could cause more clouds in the sky and more moisture in the air causing more wet sometimes cold weather. Regardless, (IMHO) sometimes an overall warming affect can cause cold weather in places. One thing is for sure, there are major changes happening in the far north. I see that 1st hand. Things are getting warmer here both in the winter and the summer. Carbon has been present in the air for thousands of years and gets introduced by natural causes. My concern is that the natural way of things AND billions of people on the earth not giving a crap combined makes for trouble. The earth can cleanse and renew itself all by herself. My concern is that with the addition of billions of human influences at the rate in which we do, we may be doing so at a rate that is too fast for the earth to cleanse itself in a timely manner. Is global warming a natural occurance? Probably. Speeding up the proccess may be a problem. These all of course are only opinions and thoughts. Not trying to change other's views or telling it how it is. Just food for thought. M
.270 Report post Posted December 31, 2010 i have to admit that i don't know enough about "global warming" to make a lot of guesses on my own. but i can read. and the folks that scream it's happening don't have any credibility left because they've been caught llieing so many times and the guys that have credibility and real experience say things contrary to the liars. so i tend to listen to them and put some stock in what they say. but i do know a lot about electricity and generating and delivering it. from the coal pile to meter on your house, i've been involved in it for well over 30 years. and "anyone" that thinks we have enough "green" power to do anything is sadly either naive, ignorant or just plain stupid. there isn't enough wind or solar power in this country right now to make up for even one mediocre coal fired power plant. and there never will be. it's a joke. the wind doesn't blow all the time and when it does it doesn't blow at a constant rate and it is very hard to synch with the steady 60 cycles that real power plants make. the stuff they have to do to make it synch destroys their reliabillity and wreaks havoc with maintaining them. it's a lot to explain, but they aren't as reliable a yugo. and solar, well, in case you haven't noticed, it gets dark every night. the company i recently retired from just got done putting a solar setup on a school. covered it with panels. panels everywhere. it makes about 10% of the power they need to run the school. during the day, when the sun is shining. solar is pretty neat in small amounts. like to run a pump or pump jack or solar setup on a house that's off the grid. but you have to have a battery backup for after dark and it won't work for a lot of applications. can't even use it to run a hair dryer. but it's nice for lights and the tv and stuff. but on a large scale, forget it. it ain't happenin'. the best alternative is nuke power. cleaner than all other options, even the "green" stuff. and very reliable. and don't say chernobyl. every non-commie engineer and scientist that looked it called it a staionary bomb before they even built it. you have to do it right. all global warming is, is a way for politicians and shysters to seperate you from your money. they wanna add all these carbon charges to your power bill, auto fuel and electricity, and everyone thinks the oil and power companies have to pay it. guess what? they won't pay a dime, they just increase their fees and you pay it. smell the coffee, don't drink the koolaid. and dang, this is one cold winter. it's called "the weather". billrquimby Report post Posted December 31, 2010 I've looked out of airplane windows across six of the seven continents, and my opinion (for what it is worth) is there will need to be a lot more people on this planet before what we humans do will have an impact -- good or bad -- on climate. This planet is vast, and only a tiny portion of it is occupied by humans. Even in places with large populations such as China and Europe, the untouched-by-man places vastly outnumber the polluted areas. We cannot dispute that the world's climate is changing, though. I have friends in Alaska, Canada, Argentina and New Zealand who will tell you that their glaciers definitely are shrinking rapidly. But are humans to blame or is the change simply part of the natural cycles of warm, cold, warm, cold that have gone on for as long as this earth has existed? I vote for the second option. Here's the question we should be asking: if California really is going to be covered by rising seas when the polar caps melt, why would Al Gore build his latest mansion on the beach?
