AZHUNTERRENT4 Report post Posted December 28, 2010 I was thinking about going out tomorrow, but I've never hunted in the rain. Is it hard?dumb? Any input would appreciated.
Coues Sniper Report post Posted December 28, 2010 Depends on how hard it's raining. I've found a light drizzle to be pretty productive. Especially around rut. I think as long as the rain isn't heavy enough to bother them, they feel more comfortable as it provides a bit of "cover". Keeping yourself and your bow/rifle dry is the only issue. If it's raining really hard though, they try to get out of it - IMO. Give it a go, you can't kill one from the couch. Good luck.
Guest Lobo Report post Posted December 28, 2010 I think that I am more uncomfortable in the rain than deer are. The rain may even help cover my noise. I normally don't let weather keep me from hunting. I really dislike hunting in wind though. The day after a cold front is a good time to see deer in the sun. Layering my clothes, extra DRY clothes and socks/shoes and taking care of my equipment are also important things to remember. I also remind myself that rocks/cliffs are slippery. CouesBuckhunter Report post Posted December 28, 2010 as long as its not raining cats and dogs you should be fine and the deer should be moving alittlw with the pre rut going on right now. I personally like the light rains because it masks your noise on a spot n stalk and it generally distracts a buck. The oly con about the rain is that your equipment may not handle good, especially if you are glassing or going in for the shot.
tjhunt2 Report post Posted December 29, 2010 There was a time when rain or wind would not stop me from walking the hills but as I get older I'm not walking in the stuff any more. It will stop sooner or later. I now will go sit in my truck and wait for it to stop or sit in the comfort of my ground blind staying warm and dry. This storm moving thru our state, starting tomorrow, will lite them bucks up so be prepared for some great glassing. Rain won't bother them much this time of year when they have other things on their mind. Get out there. Beats sitting at home or in camp. TJ
DesertBull Report post Posted December 29, 2010 I'm just hoping that the bucks I have been scouting for Jan don't get pushed down the mountain and into the manzanita by snow. The same thing happened to me last year. Got 12" of snow a few days before the season opened and all the deer left the top of the mountain.
mcelkhunter Report post Posted December 29, 2010 The rain definately helps you if you are stalking game. It will keep the noise down, makes it harder for them to hear and will also keep your scent down. Of course it helps if you have good clothes that will keep you dry and isn't noisy. My Rights As An American Report post Posted December 29, 2010 I love hunting a nice steady rain, but I love hunting a nice steady snow even more!!! Have not had many opportunities for the snow hunts, but I have enjoyed each one greatly. You can be sure that the animals are out and about if the weather is not too bad, and holed up nicely in a warm, dry place if it is! Find something out of the wind and rain and move SLOWLY!!!!
