DesertBull Report post Posted December 17, 2010 awesome. That bottom one looks like a bruiser. I wish I could kill the lion that keeps coming by my deer stand when I'm not there. Ever since it showed up, I have not had a single deer walk by.
Blade53 Report post Posted December 18, 2010 awesome. That bottom one looks like a bruiser. I wish I could kill the lion that keeps coming by my deer stand when I'm not there. Ever since it showed up, I have not had a single deer walk by. We hunted U33 2 years in a row 2 years ago and last year, the first year we kicked butt went 4 for 4 and seen lots of deer. The second year with pre season scouting we set a trail camera and got pictures of a big lion on it. Year 2 we went 2 for 4 but wasnt seeing the amount of deer and bucks we saw the previous year. My boys actually saw the lion the 2nd day but had no chance at him, a lion in the area definatly messes up your hunting and can wipe out a buncha deer in a very short time......Dan
DesertBull Report post Posted December 18, 2010 Yeah...I'm in 33 also. Still seeing deer, they just moved away from the water I'm sitting. Saw 30+ deer this morning.
lionhunter Report post Posted December 18, 2010 How about a story to go with the pics??? As far as "A lion" changing the number of deer you see in any given area, I totallty disagree. There is "A lion" in every inch of good Coues deer country in the state. The lions have always been there, and the deer numbers stay pretty consistant year to year. I would say look for another reason that you are not finding the number of deer. I have watched lions chase deer on more than one occasion, and 2 min. after the lion walked off the deer went back to feeding. Leave the country because there is a lion around.....nope. At any rate, give us a quick story on the lion hunt. Same day? The race? Background on the hounds?? Whitey
HD Trophy Hunts Report post Posted December 18, 2010 The big tom is from 11/29. Had a late bear hunter in (no snow) and the 2nd day of the bear hunt it snowed all day so we went in to town and got a lion tag. Caught this tom the next morning. I had him pretty well located before the snow hit. Hes a 5 or 6 yr old and was VERY HEALTHY. Lots of fat on him. The smaller tom is from Sunday the 12th. Had another client and caught this young tom on the last day of the hunt, the client had been on 2 previous hunts and said he had been waiting 32yrs to kill a lion. It was a very enjoyable hunt, this lion jumped 4 or 5 times before finally treeing in a big desert oak. The clients son in law and 10 year old grandson all were able to make it to the tree and take part in the hunt. Not sure what you want to know on the dogs. They do ok for me ;-) I will try and post video later.

Thanks Lion hunter sounds like good solid advice, I am not a perfessional Lion Hunter as I suspect you probably are, I have been around for awhile and have always heard that a lion in the area will impact the herds, expecially if it is a female lion with cubs, I read an in interesting article once that pretty much said the same thing you did that the lion and deer evolve together, and mentioned that if the statemnet that a lion will completely kill out a deer herd was correct it probably would of happened long ago, However it does mention that lion predation and hunting pressure can create a situation where deer heards can no longer with stand natural predation, and will create low deer densitys...Anyway thanks for the advice and oh we didnt leave the area, we still saw plenty of bucks but not the quality we saw the year before...with that said, find me a lion and lets go huntin.......Dan

I have seen many lions while deer hunting and the deer certainly don't leave an area because a lion moved through. I have seen the same on trail cameras. The deer continue to show up even after a lion visits a water hole from what I have seen. Nice lions Mike!
