Gavins First Coues!

Recommended Posts

Well, it all started when the draw results were posted. We found out that my dad and I, and brother Nick, had all drawn November 36c whitetail tags. We found out that my brothers Gavin, Adam, and Frankie were all unsuccessful at getting a tag. Gavin was really bummed that he didn’t get a tag. So the week of the hunt, my Dad decided to surprise him and sign the tag over to him! ( I’ve never seen him smile that big ). Opening day we decided to head out about a hour before it got light out. It was about a mile hike back to the rock bluff that we have always glassed from in previous years. It started out slow only seeing does and fawns. At about 8:30 in the morning I decided to turn my binos near a water hole that was well guarded with mesquite trees and BANG I spotted a buck feeding off the only barrel cactus that was there. With all the excitement of spotting a buck I hurried and told my dad and brothers which were about 10 yards away glassing in other directions that I had spotted a buck! I guess we were being loud  and the buck hopped into a wash and started working his way into a little valley in the mountain. We quickly came up with a game plan and Gavin and I hurried up and grabbed our rifles and headed out. Little did we know it was way thicker then we expected it to be  so it took us a while to hike through it. My dad and brother Nick stayed at the rock bluff where we were glassing from to see if he could see the buck come out of the wash. Gavin and I finally got to the point were we decided it was going to be best to get a shot when we spotted the buck. I turn on my radio to call my dad and the 1st thing he says is WOAH there is a monster buck with the buck we spotted earlier. When I heard that it got me real excited! So I radio back to my dad and ask him where are they at?? He comes back and says right across from you guys near the prickly pear!   (okay dad there are only about a million prickly pears out hear ) lol I then asked him if he could please be a little more specific and he told me right where I shot my buck last year. Right when he said that I knew exactly where they were at. I pulled up my binoculars to find the buck looking right at us underneath a mesquite tree. From what I could see it looked like a decent buck. I radioed back to my dad asking where is the big one. He then said its the one right under the mesquite! So I tell Gavin do you see the buck and he goes yes!! So then I tell him TAKE YOUR TIMEEEEEEEEE and he tells me im sooooo nervous and I could tell cause he was shaking like a Leaf! I told him to wait and let me range him and I ranged him at 281 yards and I said aim the middle crosshair and the kill zone and squeeze the trigger! He said okay are you ready and I said ya then BOOOOOM!!! I hurried up and looked with my binoculars and I could tell that he had smoked him but I noticed after her shot the BIGGER buck jumped out and started running up the mountain  Right then I grabbed my rifle and took a running shot at about 320 yards and flat out missed I decided to only shoot once not to spook him so much and head after him a little bit later that day. Right after the shot my dad was blowing up the radio saying "did he hit it" and I said yaaaaaa he smoked it. So we waited about 20 minutes to hike down to where the buck was standing when he shot it. By then my brother Nick had caught up to us and asked "have you found it yet?" I was like" NO I cant even find any blood!!!"  :o Right then i got a little worried but i kept telling them no i know he hit it. So we looked for about 10 minutes and Nick goes " OH here he is!!" :D Gavin and I hurried up and ran to where he was and that’s when the high fives and yelling started! My dad was still back at the rock bluff watching all this through his binoculars, I’m sure, with a big smile on his face! We pulled the buck out and started taking pictures! We then pack the buck out and the rest was history! I never did get another shot and Nick never did either but we didn’t care cause it was all worth it being there with Gavin for his first Coues deer!

Awesome! I bet Frankie was sad that dad didn't sign the tag over to him. I will have to give him a hard time in class today.
