bchoitz Report post Posted November 7, 2005 Great story! Those good times will last forever! Like you I appreciate those hunters who are secure enough to pass on thier knowledge, and even any tips they may have to help everyone enjoy thier hunt. They truly are great hunters to do so. Now I hope I can post similar pictures from my December 35B hunt which is the first hunt I will get to go on with my wife since we moved here from Colorado 15 years ago. Redbeard Report post Posted November 7, 2005 I have been a guide for over ten years but mostly quit about 4 years ago. I have been in the position to help a lot of people paying or not and it is always very satisfying. I used to be very secretive about everything. I hunted and scouted alone and kept info between just a couple of close friends. I realized some time ago that I don't need to keep so many secrets and it is just more fun to camp and share hunts with other folks. I still have some honey holes and little secrets but I sure don't mind sending good folks in the right direction and giving away a tip or two. I do it all the time and I guess this was just Karma coming around to help us out. If you knew my luck in hunting you'd realize I am way overdue for some of the good kind. Like I said before I'll be happy with my wife being lucky as close enough anyday. I've really enjoyed helping guys like Andy get started and seeing him take it and run so well but some of the most exciting and fulfilling hunts have been seeing my wife succeed. I know when my girls are old enough I'll get the same feelings again.
recurveman Report post Posted November 8, 2005 My buddy just got back from the BAB. He told me a story about a gal that showed up with her husband and wanted to sit the water hole that he was sitting. He was already there so they went up to the next water hole and she shot a nice 4 X 4 buck. He knew she shot a nice buck because my buddies brother actually helped get the buck into their vehicle and got all bloody while helping her. When I was talking to him this evening I told him that there was a gal that shot a nice buck on this site. He came to this site when I was on the phone with him and he said that she was the gal that he saw on the BAB. Now here is the really funny part. My buddy spent the entire trip up there and was only going to shoot a very nice 4 X 4 or nothing. Well they got nothing (3 of them) and passed on a ton of smaller bucks. Then Red's wife, who is looking to shoot the first branched antler buck that comes her way, shoots this nice trophy. I wonder if the deer gods think it is funny sometimes. Redbeard Report post Posted November 8, 2005 Hey Recurveman, That is funny. I was thinking about putting my wife on the waterhole your buddy was sitting but got there a few minutes behind him. I saw him chaining his ATV to a tree about 30 feet from a drinker and less than 100 feet from a dirt tank so I figured he was just parking there. I went over to ask him if he wouldn't mind parking somewhere else but he said he was hunting there. I suggested he might want to park his ATV out of sight of the waterhole but he said something like, "How many times have you seen deer tracks around your truck when you get back." I said, "Almost never, but suit yourself if that's how you hunt." Then went on my way shaking my head. I wondered if maybe he was really trying to keep deer out of there and was sitting a different water. We saw his ATV there again the next morning in the same spot. I guess he did us a favor. We went on to set up camp and put her on a different waterhole. His brother came by while we were trying to load her deer whole into the truck so we wouldn't leave guts etc. to spoil the waterhole for somebody else. He was sitting that waterhole the next day so I'm glad we didn't gut it there and sure was grateful for his help getting the deer in the truck.
recurveman Report post Posted November 8, 2005 I don't know where the water hole was but he told me he saw a ton of bucks and quite a few smaller 4 X 4's. He actually saw one buck come to the drinker that he thought was a shooter but didn't get a shot. I'm not sure where his quad was but I'm sure it was in the same spot. I think he is just scared to leave his quad anywhere that he can't see it. Personally, that is why you have insurance. Here is another thing to remember. We've shot a ton of animals one night (or in the morning) and sat the tank the next hunt and shot another animal off of the tank with the gut pile and bones right there at the water hole. (You can't really move elk). For some reason I haven't seen gut piles affect the animals nearly as much as I would have thought. I guess they don't realize that is where their buddy just got whacked. highroller Report post Posted November 8, 2005 the kids <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The only thing wrong with your wifes buck is there is no tag on the animal. You would think a guide would know the first thing you do when you get your animal down is to tag it,especially before you load it into a vehicle to transport it. recurveman Report post Posted November 8, 2005 Ya know I never really thought about where to put the tag. I just always put it on the antlers or horns. I hate putting it on the antlers when I'm taking pics. Normally I will take a few pics without the tag and then some with the tag on. But I think from now on I'm just going to put the tag through the leg and be done with it. That takes care of my picture taking issues. Redbeard Report post Posted November 8, 2005 Yeah, I think we give deer too much credit for being smart sometimes. Really they have some basic survival instincts but they are NOT conscious like people. I have shot many animals where their buddies just kept on feeding right around the dead one. Gut piles attract coyotes and deer don't like to come to water with a pack of coyotes present or if they smell them they will be nervous so I think that is reason enough not to leave them there if possible. Redbeard Report post Posted November 10, 2005 Highroller, Surely you are joking or just an onery (perhaps jealous, angry?) person. First off I hate to ruin a picture by putting an ugly tag on the antlers. So, second, just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there. Third if AGFD wants to ruin the memories of an entire family of an excited 44 year old mother of two by writing her a ticket for not being able to see her tag in the pictures, send 'em over. Redbeard Report post Posted November 10, 2005 Thanks 25-06. I would have thought it was a total joke until I noticed the "angry" face at the top of the post. Notice he has exactly one post which means one of two things. Either he is a regular user who wants to take a shot anonymously so reregistered under a new name (I hope not) or somebody who just registered to stir up trouble because he can't stand to see somebody else happy (more likely). I just got done boiling out the skulls for both of our bucks (what a pain). It isn't so bad since I get to really look over the antlers. I forgot how much I used to enjoy fondling antlers and looking at every detail. Both of our deer still have bit of velvet on them. This season has helped get me excited about hunting again. My wife is more excited too. Funny how just being lucky can do that to you. I guess that's how the casinos get rich.

Azlongears Report post Posted November 14, 2005 It's about time you Dunns had some luck breeze your way!! I have never been around a more ethical and by the book bunch. Such a great start to a hunting season couldn't have gone to a better family. The Dunns would be there in a second to anyone that is familair to them, and its about time some of that "Karma" catches up. Never have I met people more happy to see others succeeded and more willing to help get them there. Congrats to both Chris and Janice, for our hunting sport is a far better place with them apart of it. AK
