deserttacoma84 Report post Posted December 12, 2010 Well Gents. (and ladies) A newbie here to the site but certainly not to hunting, I have decided to share with you my success to 2010. I had not been wt hunting since the fall of 2006. My brother and dad had been hunting a new area for the last 3 years and were debating on whether or not to go back due to the escalating situation near the border. After having the family over for thanksgiving we loaded up and headed south getting into camp about 12:30am that night. Set up camp and got to bed. Somehow we missed our alarm and woke up way late opening morning. (sun was coming up). As we started up the ridge line we had a group of hunters across the ridge from us working the same direction which would have greatly worked to our benefit had we been set up how we had hoped. Well those very hunters kicked up 2 nice bucks that we just barely saw before they crested a saddle and disappeared. All in all that day we saw a good amount of deer. A couple bucks, mostly does though and not quite what I was looking for. The next day we made sure we were up early and started our hike in the moonlight and made it to the spot where we would set up for the first part of the morning. All weekend was windy and cold. As the sun started to rise we started glassing the slopes in hopes to find some deer feeding before getting out of the wind. I spotted a couple does right off the bat towards the top of the ridge line across from us. My brother decided to move up to a higher point to get a better view of the ridge. I moved just a little lower and started glassing again. Within less than a minute I spotted a buck bedded down. My brother confirmed that it was a buck and I crept up to where my brother was at to get a better view. My dad was down the ridge from us on the same side and we tried to radio him in to watch as I would prepare to take a shot. Just about 8am I had the bipod legs set and a my pack under the butt of the 300 wsm that I was using. Ranged at 386 yards. I missed my first shot shooting just high. The buck got up and slowly walked down the ridge about 15 yards from where he was bedded down. My second shot was just above his back he stood still for a second just long enough for me to rack another round. The 3rd shot did the job. My 4th deer and biggest coues yet and not bad for work keeping me out of hunting for the last 4 years. I have got the itch back and can't wait for next fall! Enjoy the pics and thanks for reading
