AZkiller Report post Posted December 11, 2010 Considering that I have heard of 15 220 plus carp killed this year and only 5 120 plus coues, I would say 120=230.

Snapshot Report post Posted December 12, 2010 I think a Turkey with a ten inch beard, is equal to a 3 pound quail. Sorry, but I couldn't resist.
Coues Archer Report post Posted December 12, 2010 Ok i believe a 115 coues is equal to a 175 "Desert Muley".... But if your hunting on the strip or in the kiabab or in Northern AZ i would bump those muley scores up to 195...
billrquimby Report post Posted December 12, 2010 Record books and measuring tapes will be the death of hunting. I reached this conclusion after editing the SCI record books for 17 years and seeing how some hunters measured their manliness by the size of the antlers, horns or skulls of the animals they killed. Guest super jumbo Report post Posted December 12, 2010 Record books and measuring tapes will be the death of hunting. I reached this conclusion after editing the SCI record books for 17 years and seeing how some hunters measured their manliness by the size of the antlers, horns or skulls of the animals they killed. Bill Quimby I , and most of the people i hunt with or know that trophy hunt use "scoring" as a simple guideline to determine their minimum animal they are willing to harvest. I also know alot of people including us that have multiple boone and crockett and pope and young entries for multiple diff species that will never be entered. As for me and my family, none of our animals will ever be entered in the "books". There is almost no way to talk about hunting these days without refrencing a score. I also think and have witnessed lots of people in the recent past with all the hype about scoring pass animals they would normally have shot on opening day. They had heard about a certian score from others and decided to adopt that score as their own determinant for harvesting an animal or not. This has saved many animals from being shot as we evolve from simply mowing down the first deer we see to looking for a deer that is more mature, and describing that more mature deer with a score. Instead of every spike or two point being shot some guys elect to pass these animals now because of their "score". I know that 20 years ago when scores were not important i threw lead down range at anything that had the slightest antler on its head. Now because of scoring we let almost everything walk unless it meets a certian criteria. I love going home empty handed after passing many lesser "scoring " bucks on a hunt. Dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong in any way shape or form with harvesting a small buck, but recent emphasis on score has some good atributes by saving more "score" inferior deer for another year. Not trying to argue with you bill quimby just thought of some positives that have to do with scoring.
Guest 300ultramag. Report post Posted December 12, 2010 the "hunt" is the trophy.. to be successful in harvesting a legal animal is the "trophy".. a little extra horn on top is just an added bonus! it sucks for the people that are bent on bigguns... me I love any 3x3 coues.. and any 4x4 muley dont care what the score is.. just quit shooting labrador size black bears... geesh.. my craft is my shooting.. all accolades aside.. the time put in behind the string or loading bullets.. and then making a shot that drops em in there tracks.. thats a trophy hunt!! I agree with you 300ultramag that the hunt is the true trophy and not the score of the animal harvested.. That is exactly why many guys pass animals based on a score because the hunt isnt about whether you harvest an animal or not, less alone the score. If i based the success of a hunt on a score or even the success of the hunt on harvesting in itself then i would shoot the first animal i saw. I would rather look at the animal in the wild than shoot it at times, but if it has huge head gear than that is the breaking point of whether or not i discharge my weapon or not. By going by a certian score i have been able to spend more time in the forest, and not be done on opening day. It is an awsome responsibility to decide to harvest an animal, and sometimes going by score keeps the harvesting part down, and the hunting part(camp friends ,scenery, nature itself, hiking, glassing) up. Going by a score has kept me from shooting and ending a hunt quickly, and allowed me to hunt longer. It has allowed my hunts to last longer in general and put the emphasis on just watching the animals instead of shooting the fist buck is saw. Going by score also has allowed me to go home empty handed, and over the long run has shown me it is not even about being successful on harvesting any buck regardless of the score, its about the time in the forest with friends and these cool coues deer we all like to chase. Scoring has to positive stuff that goes with it.
