Recommended Posts

This was the first time I've eve been in 7 east and it was my brother Dan's hunt (late rifle bull tag)last year he was lucky to get a 360 bull but this year the population wasn't there and i just didnt know if anyone had luck with this unit we were on the west side of humphreys peak. oh and dose an early snow affect the pattern of the elk?

They were there, just have to find where they hide during that time of year. There wasn't a lot of snow but it seemed to be just enough and had been there long enough to push them out of some of the areas. Was helping a buddy on that hunt and he passed on a handful of small bulls and couldn't connect on the mature bull that we found on our last day there.

Darn straight snowfall can have an effect on elk depending on the depth. 7E is a tough unit even when they are bugling. There are some awesome bulls in the pinyon/juniper flatlands but being a late hunt, you guessed it, bulls are very tough to hunt. That said, and having spent alot of time in 7E, for a hunter that pays attention to details and is observant, he can do quite well in 7E even in the late season.

Happy hunting!

Yeah Id say you were a little high during that hunt this year. Its really hit or miss on that hunt but we got that snow a good week before season. It was just deep enough to cover the available browse and seemed to have pushed them off once the hunt began. We checked out one of our spots that consistantly holds elk at about 8500-9000 ft and there was no recent sign at all.

That said on dryer years all bets are off. Ive found sheds at close to 10000 ft. It really depends on what feed is available. my two cents
