***HELP ME***

Recommended Posts

Okay I just bought a HOWA VRMT 308WIN 20'' HB 1:12 twist 4RD BL HOGUE and I ordered a Vortex Viper 4-12x40 bdc 1" scope. Now my question is, I got the scope from Sportsmans Warehouse (thank god I found one because they just discontinued them) but I found that the 6-20x44 viper 30mm bdc is the same price. I plan on being dead confidant out to 800 yards. Do I really need the 6-20x44 or should I just stick with the 4-12x40? What should I do take it back and get the more power or 12 is enough? I need yourguys experiance that have had these 20 and 12 power scopes. Thanks in advance.

Take it back and get a Zeiss scope from Doug....

Thats okay I have had the diamond back vortex and the BDC is dead nuts and great glass. I have even looked at the ziess and vortex side by side and at low light the vortex was better. Dont get me wrong ziess is good but why pay extra for NO reason. Thanks for your input.

Personally, I would go with the 6-20x44. I own a VariXIII 6.5x20 and also a cheaper Alpen 6x24. I use the Alpen on my 22.250 for predators. I don't have any issues with picking up game at close ranges, even when those coyotes are charging hard.

At 800 yards I think you will enjoy having the 20 power over 14. Plus your 44mm will gather a touch more light in low light conditions than the 40.

I am by no means an expert on long range shooting, but that's my opinion.

Get the 20X... you won't regret it!

At that range, I would be using turrets as opposed to hashmarks on a reticle. You will also likely need to be on max magnification all the time for the BDC to be accurate, so in essence the BDC is giving you a fixed 20x scope. In heavy mirage, thicker cover, or shorter ranges, you may wish to dial down the magnification. I t looks like the Vortex BDC only has a few dots for every hundred yards.

I'd say go 20X over 12X for your purposes, but I agree with RR on the Turrets. The best long range guys I know always dial adjust and hold dead on, and they are really good at putting the bullet where it goes.
