talltines Report post Posted December 2, 2010 I'm about to deal with the same issue. I plan on putting the blind and its carry bag in a extra large garbage bag and putting pine needles and pine cones along with some dirt from the area where I hunt. I will use aprox. 1/2 gallon of scent-away spray and soak it real good. finally I will attach a couple earth scent wafers and one pine scent wafer to the blind when I am hunting. That is the biggest downside of hunting from a ground blind. If you can, set it up a couple weeks prior to hunting to let the deer get used to it. Good luck! deercrazy Report post Posted December 2, 2010 How about setting it up in the yard, and let a buck bomb off all over it.
Coach Report post Posted December 2, 2010 I'm no expert when it comes to scents, but depending on where you live, I'd suggest setting it up outdoors for as long as you can. Scent killers are probably OK, but I'm not sure about the earth-scent and pine-scent wafers...they might do more harm than good. If you are brushing it in, the natural smells from pinion or cedar limbs cut locally might do a better job of masking scent than any artificial cover scents. Let us know what you find. Jackal Report post Posted December 2, 2010 If you had one of the Log6 ozone machines they work great. I used mine in the truck since my kids left some food in the back no more smell.
bonecollector Report post Posted December 2, 2010 I set mine up in the backyard for a few weeks when I bought it to get rid of the new smell.
azslim Report post Posted December 2, 2010 Hit up your neighbor that has horses, set it up in the corral or bury it in the pile of horse poop - good cover scent....
azpredator@work Report post Posted December 2, 2010 I don't know what material is used on the vision, but my double bulls have come pretty scent free. I do however set them out in the backyard for several days before setting them out in the woods. I spray the inside heavily with dead down wind and let the sun do it's thing after that. No smell issues detected by me or deer. Good luck.
talltines Report post Posted December 2, 2010 How about setting it up in the yard, and let a buck bomb off all over it. Bad idea! You really want to go un-noticed, using an attractant scent will draw the attention directly to your location. Maybe Ok for rifle hunting, but not a good idea for bow hunting. I would try to mimic the natural sourrounding smells such as trees and dirt.
jamaro Report post Posted December 2, 2010 I set mine up and wash mine like a car with Scent Free Soap... make sure you do both the inside and out AND don't forget to wash the bag it came in. I don't think you can completely get rid of the smell but I am at least tryiing to trick the deer in thinking that the scent that they are picking up is further away OR has already passed. jamaro Report post Posted December 2, 2010 Oh yah... and as far as cover scents go.... I am not a real fan of them... I have read(I can't remember where) have the ability to disect different scents...SOOOOO The deer will be able to tell that the blind is there... J
bear402 Report post Posted December 3, 2010 I use scent killer and try to pack some natural vegetation in withthe blind during transport. I never use the fresh earth scent in the desert, It just doesn't smell natural me. IMO, brushing in with local vegetation provides the best cover scent. Setting up down wind when possible is always a plus !!
