bullwidgeon Report post Posted November 2, 2005 For whatever reason this hunt was a tough one. We really had to work on the bucks which we were into every day but just had alot of bad luck actually killing them. We passed up a ton of bucks early and stalked and tried to kill 5 different bucks and it never worked out over the first few days. Opening morning I was set up to shoot a big toad at 385 yards and they got spooked by a running doe and got up, I was never given a clean shot as the big one snuck up through the thick stuff. I could have shot the 2 smaller bucks easily several times but not the toad. It was way too hot and the deer were stacked up on water. Everywhere we glassed more than a half mile from water we found no deer, but if we looked near water we found a ton of them. My buddy also got his first coues buck and had plenty of oppertunities at solid deer including one toad that gave us the slip Saturday night, never to be seen the next morning. Oh well, we were finally happy to be tagged out yesterday and look forward to maybe getting back down there and trying to find the antlers of both the toads we saw if they don't get killed this year. I shot mine at a little over 400 yards yesterday morning out of a group of 3 bucks which I glassed up behind camp at first light. He was the biggest of the three and I was pleasantly suprised to walk up and find out he is actually bigger than I thought when I shot him. Thats my first experience with ground growth instead of ground shrink. My buddy shot his buck midday at 200 yards on Sunday, once again did I mention it was HOT ? Good luck all you November hunters and focus the hunt on the thickest slopes you can find near water. The deer were really brushed up hard and holding tight after day one. Bret M. az4life Report post Posted November 2, 2005 Great job guys! Another 2 give up tasting Tag soup for the year. I hate those hot hunts too. Gave up on the early hunts since it seems we always have one of those record breaking heat waves if I get drawn for the early hunt.
