Ok I'm lookin to get a bird dog and was wondering what breeds ya'll would reccomend? i have been looking at German Short hairs and i like them but I read somewhere that they tend to wonder off? what do you guys think? I hunt waterfowl and quail and would like to have a dog that can do both. Any advise would be great thanks.

German shorthairs are great versatile dogs-even come with web feet and love the water. As far as them tending to wander off, no more so than any other hunting breed-turn them loose and they want to go hunt. All breeds take some training to learn that they are hunting with you and not you trying to hunt with(find) them. ;)

I have four Brit's and they make a excellent pointer/retriever and family dog. All my dogs have been trained to hunt within my prescribed limits, 30-60 yards in front of me and coursing 30-40 Yards to the side, it takes some work but these dogs catch on quick. I have also hunted over GSP's, French Brit's and a Weimeraner (spelling) and they were all very good, and their owner's were every bit attached to them as I am to my Brit's. Once you have socialized the dog to you, where willful compliance is achieved, training goes much easier.

Good Luck,

Gene

i have 2 shorthairs. shorthairs wont wander off at all. unless you dont have them trained. but that would be any dog not trained. some shorthairs dont like water at all. my older shorthair absolutely hates it but if there is a bird in the water she cant resist and has to go in. so also depends on there bird drive. if you get a shorthair pup get them in water alot so they learn to like it

I have always liked English Setters and Visala. I think the setter is a little easier to train, but that might depend on the dog. I don't think that you could go wrong with any of the breeds listed so long as you are willing to put the time in on them.

I have an English Setter coming in the late spring. She will be of the Classic style.

Can't say how birdy she will be but I am looking forward in working with her.
