Hey everyone, glad to hear so many of you got yur deer or helped others with thiers. I was blanked in 32 all due to my hurry to get out in the field. On opening day i glassed 2 shooters so after a hard climb decent climb i was within range. I prepare for the shot when my rifle just fires, luckly they dont spook so i ready for another try BAM another unprompted discharge. When i flip the safety to the fire position the weapon discharges. This being a MAJOR safty issue i decide to head back to camp and get my back up rifle (a must have). Well long story short in the mist of getting going on the hunt i 4 got to pack the AMMO doh. I feel like i cheated myself. I was at least able to spot for a buddy and seen a nice nice buck but he was unable to make the shot. So he lives for another day or season who knows. I am taken my rifle to a smith and getting excited for the next round of bow season, man i love this sport. Even though i didnt tag out i had a great time in the field. good luck to the rest of the seasons hunters cant wait to see pics and hear the stories.

Savage was my guess. I have seen them do that before. The firing pin gets filed down to were it will not hold back in the fire position. The saftey position is still good. Very glad no one was in front of you. When I first ran into this isue. I was pointing out a buck to a friend and boom Right in my face :o . It had to have missed my head by meer hairs. . It almost ruined a friend ship right there. He never walked behind me again.

Atleast it is not human error. When equipment goes down you have no say so right. Good luck in archery hunts. :D

dang azhuntsman, what rotten luck. i've seen the same thing happen with remingtons. get a little dirt in the wrong place. not too familiar with savages, but what experience i do have with em tells me to look another direction. they have a lotta bolt head problems too. the old savage 99's were a real work of art. don't care for the new ones at all. real poor quality. anyway, i feel for ya. pretty helpless feeling to have bucks in range and a gun that won't work. i have 2 words for ya, "PRE-64 MODEL SEVENTY WINCHESTER .270". best action ever made. pick one up at your local gunshow. Lark,

My "backup" rifle is a rem 700 mountain rifle in .270, i think this will now be my "main" for awhile lol. But i will be in the market for another rifle i have nothing but issues with the savage everything for the barrel to getting a scope to fit right. this time i think i have had it with the rifle after it gets back from the smith its being sold. Now i have to get out and practice with the bow a bit its been 3 months since i held it lol.

Az Hm,.. how was the water situation in 32?

See a lot of hunters tag in the area you were in?

I have the 32 Nov,...can only do the last 4 days. Have a 6a ML Bull for 1st week.

Planning on packing in under the full moon 3-5 miles wed's nite the 16th I hope.

Or Thurs a.m.

There are a few monsters in there every year.

From the weather in 22 this past weekend it seemed to be pretty nice weather for this years Oct hunt. Wasn't it?

Still better than working,..just being out there right.

Thanks,

Dan

Its mishappens like this we all thank god we practice hunter(rifle) saftey. Its a story to tell the kids on how important it is to nvr be infront of a loaded weapon no matter who is holding it. The weather was great little warm but breezy it kept them beded down most of the day.

Scarey and sad at the same time azhuntsmen. Glad to hear no one was injured. Let us know what the reason is for the problem and we can pass on the corrective steps if any to keep us safer.

I guess that is another reason to treat every firearm as if it was loaded (and has a bad safety) .

Unfortunately I guess that did not apply to your back-up.

Good Luck with the bow hunting!

azhuntsmen, yeap it happened to me like WHT_MTNMAN is saying (I'm glad somebody read my posts :P ) the discouraging part was that I had a possible 114 inch buck at a little over 250 yards form me.But above all I thank God that the rifle was being pointed in a safe direction (maybe I hit a satellite some were :D )

Is a little disapointing I know,I was in your shoes I know exactly how you feel. But I'm glad you made it home safe and that still you had a good time.God bless you more my friend.

Never trust a safety.Safety is a mechanical device that can fail

Glad you were ok. I had the same thing happen with my winchester model 70. I had the trigger pull lightened by a smith. Worked fine at the range.

First time I took it deer hunting, after carrying it all morning, I took the safety off to unload before walking into camp. BOOM. I couldn't get it to do it again, but took it to Jensens and they fixed it so it definitely wouldn't do it ever again.

I'll be taking it out to 36B Nov. 11th. Probably will hunt near Yellow Jacket, but Tres Bellotas is an option.

That is a bummer. There must be something about that unit. Four years ago, myself, my dad, and my brother had a tag in that unit. My dad and I headed to the area up near Klondyke on the NE side of the Galiuros early one morning. My brother had to work that day and he was going to meet us there that night. That evening after that days hunt my dad and I were sitting around the campfire waiting for my brother to show. He should have been there around 8pm...9pm...nothing...10pm...nothing...11pm...nothing...finally around midnight this Ford truck pulls up to our camp. My brother drives a Dodge so we have no idea what is going on. Pretty soon my brother steps out of the truck and he is not happy. Turns out, on the road between Bonita and Klondyke, which IS the middle of nowhere, the left rear wheel falls off his truck. Not just the wheel, but the whole thing comes right off the axle. He gets out of his truck and remembers that he forgot his flashlight. He then decides to start walking, but where...so he grabs his valuables, gun, etc. and heads to our camp walking in the pitch black. Luckily he found a ranch hand that gave him a ride. The next day we drive out to look at this truck and the Graham County Sheriff towed it. It wasn't a fun trip for him.

The next year, 32 again, he decides not to drive. When we get home, his truck had been stolen. We only hunted there one other time and he drove his truck but only if someone else followed him. I also had my sleeping bag blow out of the truck on the way once, that was a cold hunt.

There must be some kind of bad karma in 32... :P

If you have adjusted your trigger on the savage you might have to tighten it up just a touch. Savage is a good rifle I have one and it shoots 1/2 groups easy with 150 gr NBT's .The trigger can be made very smooth and very crisp if you work it right. Good luck with it. If you don't want it any more e-mail me I'll buy it.

Bummer, I sure hope my gun never does that. It would scare the crap out of me.

Good reminder to always point your muzzle in a safe direction!

Dodger, I can see why 32 seems like bad karma to you! That's a bunch of bad luck! I had a bad flat in 32 once and couldn't get the tire off myself due to stripped lugnuts. I waited for quite awhile and then some nice guys came by. It took us a very long time to get it off. I can't remember what eventually worked, but we tried every tool and wrench we each had. Thank God those guys stopped to help.

Amanda
