schmalts Report post Posted November 17, 2010 So i never hunted Coues before. I always opted for Mule deer instead when I hunt AZ. This year I decided to see what all the hype is about these little deer and try it. I drew a 36A DEC hunt. I only have 4 or 5 days to hunt, so I am coming out the 26th and staying until new years. I see them when I hunt Mule deer but I usually am pretty low for those deer and still I see some Coues mixed in. So, here is the question... Should I go up higher for this hunt in this unit? BTW, i have not spent a lot of time in 36A, more time I have spent closer to the border in the lower part of the BA wildlife area. Any advice welcome.. BTW, what is the illegal traffic like in 36A? elkhunter Report post Posted November 17, 2010 Illegal traffic is pretty decent, they tried to steal my sister's truck when she camped out there the last time for scouting, she came out running of the tent shooting her pistol in the air. Border patrol says to always keep your gun cocked. Truth be told, the biggest coues bucks in the unit are found in mule deer country. If you are seeing whitetails when chasing mule deer, you're in a good spot and I would stick with that. If you ain't seein many bucks in the low country after a day or two, move up into the moutains, theres more bucks up higher but they aint as big as the ones in the flats. Azcowboy12 Report post Posted November 17, 2010 In december I have seen some real nice coues deer in the flats and in the rolling hills, hope for cold weather and an early start to th rut and youll do just fine. Use precaution like you would any where else, for the most part the border patrol are the ones that give hunters problems, this year while scouting in Aug, the helio came up out off the bottom of a canyon and circled us for a min or two, but you will see more agents than you will border crossers. joeybari Report post Posted November 17, 2010 Position your self below a nice Mountain looking up, keep the sun on your back, get good binos 15 is a plus, practice shooting past 200 yards 300 yards is the norm, thank your time glassing your in the rut so glass and glass And one thing I can say will most likely see some illegal activities not a whole bunch to close to xmass and to cold. Have fun and let us know how it goes Good luck
