justin_birch Report post Posted November 15, 2010 Just wondering if people buy pelts and where you can sell them. How much does a bobcat or a coyote pelt sell for?

standman Report post Posted November 15, 2010 Here is where I have sold my fur: Globe Hide & Fur Co 707 E Cactus Dr, Globe, Arizona 85501 (928) 425-9455 There is a fur sale usually in February in Globe too. Contact Arizona Trappers Association for dates. As for prices, for the past couple years for bobcats I averaged around 175, foxes 15, and coyotes around 10. AntlerObsession Report post Posted November 15, 2010 Is that price for a tanned Pelt, or just stretched? What kind of prep work is done on those furs?
standman Report post Posted November 15, 2010 Is that price for a tanned Pelt, or just stretched? What kind of prep work is done on those furs? Those are for fleshed, raw pelts, dried and stretched with Borax (don't ever dry with salt), and then brushed real good to get all dried blood and dead hair out of the fur. I haven't seen what the market is for fur this year. Now these prices were for high country animals. Desert animal prices will be slightly lower usually. tomgobbler Report post Posted November 15, 2010 in the past the globe guy has made a 2 day trip i think 3 times a year, he leaves on a saturday and makes several stop out in new mexico, ending the day i think in gallup, and then on sunday he comes back through, i'm not sure were all he stops, but snowflake is one of them..... i NEVER felt the guy gave me fair prices and i WONT sell to him again..... i feel the fur auction is the same way, NOT the best plave to get the best dollar.... BUT there are lots of guys that both sell to him, and sell at the auction... Standman.... if your getting $175 for your big toms, and if they are from the high country, then i'll buy all of them from you, straight across the board for all toms, as long as there not yearling kittens. I have never used borax on any of my hides, you case skin, flesh ( scrape ALL fat, meat, ect off of hide), sew up holes, and wash ( i wash mine in a 5 gallon bucket with dishsoap or shampoo) rinsing really well. i leave them hang over a chair for a few hours or what ever until they are "dry" not really dry but exces water is off from the wash and rinse put it on a wood or metal hide streches fur side IN for abot 10-12 hours, then TURN it hair side OUT and restretch.... leaving for a week or so, then i pit it on wire and hang it from my shop, unitl i have enough that i'm ready to sale, the of course you can brush/comb it to make it look as fluffy and nice as possible.... Some use borax, some dont, i never have..... thats how i do, no right or wrong way , as they say there are several ways "to skin a cat" good luck in your hunting

My high cat last year got me just over 300 but females around 175-200, and then the small cats were lower. The fur sale in Globe isn't the best for getting good prices, and if you are not a member of the Arizona Trappers Association they will keep a small percentage. I have shipped fur several times to Canada and got alot better prices. I don't look to make alot of money from fur, just make enough to fund my hunting trips for the next year so I don't worry too much anymore what someone is giving for prices. As for the Borax, like you said there are several ways to skin a cat. It is just the way my dad taught me when he was trapping for many years. Brian

standman Report post Posted November 16, 2010 Great info thanks . I had no idea pelts were worth so much. Prices now are nothing compared to what the were back in the 80s when my dad was trapping. Top dollar for foxes was $48, Coyote $90, and the best cats were all the way up to $600. OH, for the good ole days. Brian
