Myself and my boy drew unit 41 tags this year, but I decided to donate mine to Outdoor Experience 4 All and let another kid try to take a buck, and spend the hunt helping my son Austin get his. The boy that got the tag got sick on Friday and was not able to hunt with us. We got out early Friday morning, but the deer were able to give us the slip. My son noticed a trail being used down a treeline and we decided to give chase. We found where they were heading to bed in the mornings and feed in the evenings. We set up that night, but some other hunters spooked the deer and they just stayed in the brush until dark.

 

This morning we set up where they would break out of the treeline for a bit before they got into the heavier brush, but they didn't show up like usual. I decided to move up a little closer to the treeline to check and see if they were held up. I then noticed some other hunters about 400 yards ahead of us and they had spooked the herd. It was hard to see much since we were on the flats, but I managed to glass up some deer angling away from us and decided to try and cut them off. We had to run about a half mile through the flats into the rolling desert, but I picked them back up again and they were going to cross in front of us about 250 yards out. There were a ton of does and fawns in the group, but hardly any bucks. Right when I thought the herd was gone, 2 bucks stopped broadside and I told him to use the first circle on the Nikon BDC scope and aim a bit high. He hit the buck back a bit and knocked him down, but he got up and held tight behind some trees. About five minuted went by when I found the buck about 20 yards to the left. My boy found him in the scope and made the slight downhill 270 yard shot and caught the top of both lungs.

 

Five days ago I witnessed another hunter shoot a 190 inch muley and was pretty excited, but this experience was unbelievable to say the least. This was his first deer and he was very happy with his buck, and I was extremely proud to be right there when he walked up to it.

 

You can see in the pics that he was using my new Rifle Railz/LOC JAW shooting system that allows you to mount your bolt action rifle securely to a tripod, while the system stays attached to your rifle until you are ready to shoot. I think this made it much easier for him to make the long shot and stay steady on the buck. Plus, when he wasn't able to find the buck in the scope, shooting system allowed me to swivel the gun to the area and he was then able to pick up the buck and swivel gun into the correct position. The gun is a Remington 700 sps tactical .308 with a Nikon BDC scope. I was trying some new Winchester Power Max bonded 150 grain PHP ammo that performed flawlessly. I would highly recommend this ammo for any big game. I have some pics of the wound channel as well as entry and exit holes if anybody is interested. David
