jwhernandez Report post Posted November 5, 2010 After two days of hard hunting and glassing only 4 deer, the third day was a charm. It was my wife's first time to ever hunt. I bought her some camys, binoculars and a nice browning 243 set up with a vortex scope. I was trying hard to find her a deer. We had done a lot of walking up some pretty steep mountains. The first day we hiked up high and glassed a lot of country but only saw one doe. The second day I glassed up one doe then from far away, I spotted a buck on the mountain side. I took my eyes off to explain to her where to look and when I started glassing again, I seen what I thought to be a different buck but it was in the same spot. We were so far away it was hard to tell. The buck bedded and we started out on our hike up the mountain. On our way up we scared up a doe, continued up and got to the top and we couldn't see the tree the buck bedded in. So I thought we should go higher on some rock bluffs. The wind was in our favor up there and I was sure she would get it. We just needed to find it. We ended scarring up the original buck I seen, so there was two bucks. She wasn't even aware that that buck had gotten scared up. It was a nice buck. I got excited and I started telling her to hurry and shoot because it was going to bolt. Poor her she couldn't hold the gun still cause it was so windy and I kept pressuring her to shoot, that she missed. I was devastated because I rushed her so much. I should have just let her handle it the way she wanted. All night I couldn't stop thinking about it. The next day something came over her cause she could really never glass up deer. Sunday morning, she glassed 9 doe off the bat. I hadn't seen anything. lol We went to a different spot and still I couldn't glass up anything for her. It was getting a little discouraging. It was getting late in the morning and we were going to head back to camp. She says stop right here so I can look one last time. Sure enough she glassed up 3 bucks. Mind you I still hadn't seen anything. We seen them bed and we headed up the mountain again. This time we had to go straight up it. It was hard work. We got about 40 yrds from the top and sat and waited for about an hour for the bucks to get up. We didn't see any movement in the trees and rocks we thought they were in. So, I told her that we should move up more. We moved and sat for about 20 min when I caught two of the deer out of the corner of my eye. They had moved about 20 yrds on us while we were hiking up. She was facing the trees we thought they were in and it was a little difficult for her to position herself being that the mountain was steep and she didn't have a good angle to them. I tried staying calm because I didn't want the same thing to happen as the day before. They were by a tree and I told her to get the one in front. I was so worried that she would hit the tree and not the deer. It was really windy again. She set up and shot. I saw the deer flip. It was an 80yrd shot. We were both excited but she said she couldn't believe it until she seen it. So we ran up to the tree and I didn't see the deer. My heart dropped. I knew I seen it flip but it wasn't where she shot it. Looking in the thick tall grass I seen in! It had fallen about 8 ft down. She had gotten her first kill. It was a happy moment in our lives..
