My first Coues Deer

Recommended Posts

I had a good feeling about this hunt, that I was finally going to get the monkey off my back. My husband and I got left over tags in 36b and went down there with some friends to hunt. We did the same hunt last year and found a really nice spot to hunt but came away empty. We camped by a friend of our friends house, just down the road from where we were going to hunt opening day. We got down there Thursday evening about 10pm, our friends were just trying to finish setting the trailer when we got there. It was midnight by the time we got in bed and when the alarm went off at 4am it felt like we had just laid down. Mark and I headed to the spot that we were going to glass from, when it was just getting light enough to see, we geared up and headed down the trail, only to stop ahead and see a quad parked there. Well we turned around and got back in the truck and headed further down the road to find another spot to pull off. We did not like what we were seeing and decided to go back to where we wanted to glass, we pass it up a bit and pull off and started glassing from the road, about 10 minutes later I saw a deer tearing up a tree. I told Mark I was glassing a buck!!! We watched it for a few minutes before he headed over the ridge away from us. Mark asked if I wanted to go after it as it was a forky, I said yes I will be happy to take anything for my first one. We got geared up and started hiking to the ridge we last saw him on. When we got close to the ridge we slowed down, glassing many draws he could have gone to. As we crested a small hill Mark stoped and said there he is right in front of us about 70 yards. I located him in my scope and he was facing us, but had not seen us. I tried to hold my gun on him, but was shaking really bad!! So I sat down and extended the bi-pod on my gun out, that did not work as the grass was above my head when I sat! So I was going to have to try a shot standing up. Mark whispered to me to just try and scoot up to the top of the hill and try a sitting shot from there, but that I would probably bust him out and have to take a shot after he took off. So that is what I did, and sure enough I spooked him AND a second buck that had been bedded that we did not see. Mark call out to me that the second buck was bigger and to shoot him. My first shot was at the smaller buck when I spooked him, I took a second shot at the bigger buck, but missed him. I was tracking him with my scope when he finally stopped again and gave me a perfect broadside shot. I nailed him in the heart. I was so excited, gave my husband a high five and a hug and kiss. Well as usual we forgot the packframe. Mark had me go to my deer and he headed back to the truck to get the gear needed to dress him out and pack him out. I shot my deer at 8am and it was 1pm by the time we were done and back at the truck. Mark could have taken the forky but it was only about 300 yrds away and he was wanting to shoot his new long range rifle further than that. Now I am waiting for that Dec. whitetail tag and get the big one. Here are a few pictures of my Deer.
