swaro spotter eyepiece question

Recommended Posts

Good morning, I know there is always an ongoing debate concernign optics, and I actually really like reading this section hearing everyone's sides. I just thought I would start another topic. I did a quick search and didn't see that this has been talked about before on here. If I am wrong please just point it out to me.

so here is my question, what is the advantages/ disadvantages of the 25-50x Wide angle eyepiece vs. the good old 20-60x standard.

is one better for digiscoping? is the limited range of magnification worth the extra field of view? does the extra FOV bring in more light?

and the big one is... is the 25-50x worth the extra 200 bones?

look forward to hearing all your input. you all are an awesome bank of information!

good luck to all you who have oct. Deer tags.

CK, I have both, since I bought the 25 x 50, only use it now. If you want to check them out side by side and make that call for yourself let me know, I have a 17A deer tag and will be staying in Seligman this Saturday night and than again, next Thursday thru Monday. PM me and we can meet up if you can make the time, Take Care, JLG.

JLG-

thanks. I'm not sure what my schedule is gonna be like this weekend but I might try to take you up on that. I have used the 20x60 a lot but never even touched the 25-50 so it would be awesome to do a side by side, especially in lower light. I'll keep in touch

I didnt mean to limit this discussion to just these two eye pieces if any of you have input on the 20x the 30x or the 45x with respect to the others please feel free to pitch in your 2cents.

thanks,

sam

Well I decided that my question for you all about the Swarovski 25-50Wide Angle eyepiece would best be answered if I just got one and made a comparison for myself.

This week I did Just that! I recently bought the 20-60x eye piece from Doug at cameralandny.com, First off their customer service is TOP NOTCH! I have made other purchases through them and now dealing with this eye piece they are helpful, knowledgeable and very efficient.

Well in my own ignorance I ordered a different eyepiece than I thought I had looked through before. They sent me the one I ordered (20-60) but when I got it I realized that the one I had fallen in love with was in fact the 25-50x .

Well after a quick Phone call to Cameraland the deal was done and they were going to switch me the eyepiece no problems.

Five days later I now own the 25-50x wide angle eye piece. IF there is any one out there who is thinking about making this change, IT IS GREAT AND SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE 20-60x!!!! I mean it is immediately noticeable.

I set it up tonight in my drive way and looked up at the top of mnt Elden here in Flagstaff at last light and it is incredible how much more light it brings in and how much more FOV you have at both 25x and 50x.

This weekend my goal is to get out and take some pics though it so I will let you all know how well that goes ASAP.

Good luck to all who have tags coming up.

If possible, could you take a side by side comparison photo through both eye pieces? I am curious to see the difference.

Yes, absolutely. that is my plan this afternoon. I doubt I will be lucky enough to take a picture of game though it in the hour I have to get this done but I will take some landscape photos though both to see how much wider you can see at 25xW vs. the 20xS Before I send the 20x-60x back.

I was on the Swarovski Optik web page this morning and here are the hard numbers to compare.

--------------------20-60 -----------------25-50

FOV@1000yds----108-60ft ---------------128-81ft

Apparent FOV -----40*-60*---------------60*-70*

FOV degrees ------1.1*-2.1* -------------2.4*-1.6*

Eye relief ---------17mm------------------17mm

Weight ------------9.6 oz. ----------------10.4 oz.

So it looks like from that data that the only draw back is ONE OUNCE. and about $150 bucks extra.

stay tuned for photos.

The only problem I have with the 80mm swaro is trying to score a buck way off at dusk or dawn. Not sure if an eye piece would help. Maybe I dont know what I'm missin out on. Ill have to look through one some day. I might be in flag to visit my sister in early Dec, Ill have to look you up if I cant fine one here in the valley. Is it any better for digi scoping?

My name is Ryan BTW, we met at NAU a couple years ago in the construction computer classroom, I was on CWT.com.

I put a circle on the pic of the 25-50w to show the difference of Field OF View.

This is a shot of what I was looking at... good 'ol Mnt. Elden.

The thing that I noticed about the two when taking pictures, the 25-50w is much easier to find the subject in your camera and lets more light in. at the top end of the 20-60x it is nearly impossible to keep the blur out. In the end they are both great eye pieces but I am very much happier with the 25-50w than I was with the 20-60. I sat be hind my spotting scope looking a deer for about 4 straight hours this last weekend and I wasnt cross eyed when we got up to go get him, so thats gotta be some good news!

Hope this was a helpful review. Let me know if any of you have any other questions.

Ryan, I remember meeting you. give me a call or email any time your up here and your more than welcome to set up my scope and look through it.
