200"mulie Report post Posted October 12, 2010 Well yesterday i went out to do some scouting and saw couple deer. Well it all starts with me trying to find a way into the foothills. turns out there is a gate thats locked ohh shut gotta turn around. went to another area but this time no locked gate, yaaayyyy!!! drove down saw 1 other truck and pulled off the road to do some glassing (11:00 am) didn't see anything but heard water flowing. got out of the truck walked down to the water saw couple of tracks. walked back up to the truck to see how far i could get down the road with my truck. well bought 1/2 mile down the road it turns to pure rock. i turned around and back to where i previously turned off to hike out into the hills. Got my pack ready and headed down an old road that runs along the river. As i'm walking down this road i'm thinking this is perfect for deer, plenty of shade, the river isn't to loud, nice cool afternoon they probably will let me walk right by them. There is all kinds of deer tracks in and along this road, found couple puddles with tracks. Also at these puddles there were these huge butterflies (i'm guessing monarche??) After playing around with the butterflies i countinue down the path. Remamber when i said they probably let me walk right by them!!! Well it almost happened. I'm minding my own business walking down this path wondering if i should put a camera up. Then i get the chills like something is watching me! i look ahead and see nothing and slowly look to my right . . . . . and (scared the crap out of me) oh shi_ there's a deer right there!!! it was doe at 10 yards!!! I didnt have a point and shoot with me, and since it wasn't a buck i was gunna leave it alone. The doe didn't flinch just watched me walk on by. wishing i could get a picture i remember my cell phone in my pocket. I turned it on and walk 15 yards back up the road to take the picture. She still didn't move an inch, i snap the picture and it was fuzzy. I erased it and took another picture that was a lot better. saved it and was getting for another picture. this time took three steps torward her. And she didn't like it. she flagged but didn't run just wallked off. She did a little half circle back out in front of me but this time a little farther out but she is in the sun this time. (pictures 12:45 pm) well after all the excitement i made my way out into the flats to find a rock in the shade to eat a snack. well i'm scanning all over below the saddle for a deer layin in the shade. I'm not seeing anything see a bunch of fake deer legs and butts. I eat my little snack and re scan this hill still not seeing anything. But low and behold i see a deer moving @ 600-700 yards away. It was a buck also not a very big one but heck i'll shoot it for my fisrt deer kill. I didn't want to move cause there might be more deer and din't want them to bump into him (this was about 1:45pm) he finally went over the saddle at 2:20 pm. i packed up and headed out torwards the saddle it takes a long time going threw couple small gorges. by time i get up there there is a big trail used by couple deer. i happened to pick up a really old shed i'll load a pic of it later but i can say it was a nice 3x_, but couldn't find the other side. i get up to the saddle and there is a gate that a rancher put in without a lock!! what luck!! it took me all but 2 hours though So i sit down again and started to glass but not seeing anything. i take a second look at a green tank at the bottom of hill to see if there is water in it. and just north of it (my side) a deer is walking back torward me. I can't put any antlers on it. i watch it feeding along and then it went on full alert. i look in the direction it's looking and can't see anything. well the deer is jsut sitting there for several minutes on full alert. well it finally calms down and starts feeding again. i look to where the deer was looking before and there is another deer but this one looks a little bigger (body wise) and i think i saw some antlers, if it was a buck it was smaller than the one i saw before. Long staory short i have an hour before sunset so i head back torwards the truck OMG my gps says 5500 feet northwest.. in rough terrain with lots of boulders and rocks. i made it to my truck at 6:05 almost pitch dark along the river with tons of oak trees. on my way out i took a picture of what was remaining of the sunset all in all 2/3 of a day hike wasn't that bad and now i can make i plan on taking my first buck been trying to take big antler deer for my fisrt and i think that has hurt me since i passed up couple forks
