Apatkelley Report post Posted October 11, 2010 We had a great hunt. Opening morning we got to the point we wanted to glass and got setup. It was a perfect clear calm morning and we started finding deer right away. Soon, my son Forrest said that he glassed up some deer. There ended up being several bucks in the group and all of them were nice. While we were watching them, something spooked them and they ran down into some thick nasty cover. John (Hammy) was able to keep his eye on two of them as they picked their way through the thick stuff. Eventually, they stopped in a small opening and we could see both of them for awhile. Then one of them went behind a tree and out of sight. The other buck just stood there so we made a plan and moved into shooting range. John stayed back with the other kids while Ashlen, Forrest and I made the stalk. We got Forrest set up and he made what we thought was a great shot. The buck dropped and tried to get up a few times, but it looked like his back legs were out of commission. We couldn't see the buck because he had fallen behind a bush, but we knew right where he was. After about 20 minutes, John joined up with us. We left him there and the kids and I went to claim Forrest's trophy. We got to within about 10 yards of the spot he went down and he exploded out of some brush just below us. Forrest got off a quick shot but he didn't connect and the buck was over the ridge and out of sight. It didn't appear to me that he was hurt very bad and I was worried that we had blown it. John called on the raido and said he could see some blood around the bucks mouth as it was running. The buck was able to clear the first ridge, run down into the bottom and started up the next ridge. As he neared the top, he stopped out in the open. Forrest and I went back to where we had left John and were able to get into position to finish him. John took the pictures, so we didn't end up getting one with him, but thanks for all your help!!
