stalkincoues Report post Posted October 4, 2010 He isn’t one of the big ones I was hoping for but still a pretty good Bull I am happy with. We spent a few days down in the canyons and meadows we were initially seeing the Bulls in. Since the rut had started, the Bulls seemed to have moved out of this area completely in search of cows. We only saw one cow down there this year so the Bulls were gone. We moved on to other areas. The Bulls were talking early mornings and late evenings. Had three opportunities and passed on a couple Bulls that were bugling. I actually passed on this Bull I shot two days prior. Called him in and had him at 35 and 65 yards. He came right in and was alone. I was by myself this day and my camera man / hunting partner Jamey Waite hadn't made it up yet so I put down my bow and picked up my camera. I filmed him for about 10 minutes grazing and searching for the cows. He was weak on his ones, two's and his left fifth. Since I had eight more days to hunt and the rut was picking up, I decided to pass. Well two days and a couple of opportunities later, we set up around the same area I saw this Bull in. The evening was among us now and started hearing a couple of bugles. We'd set up just right and we heard a Bull gathering cows. He was bugling and running back and forth on the hill and the cows were mewing like crazy. Pretty soon the cows started trickling into view one by one from off of the hill. As he came in to viewl and out of the trees my buddy and I realized it was the same Bull from two days prior. He was now the heard Bull running the show, when just two days prior he was alone and searching. I decided to go ahead and take him since Jamey was there filming. I’d already passed on this Bull before, have a brief history with him, and now he's with about twenty cows it was all too perfect. Even though I had the entire hunt if needed I still felt very rushed and pressured for this hunt. As soon as I killed we needed to scoot out of there and get ready to drive to Wyoming for our Antelope hunt and be back before the end of the month. This aided in my decision to take this Bull so early in the hunt as well. Plus you always wonder what happens if they shut up or I don’t get another opportunity at a good Bull, much less another Bull at all. Not to mention every day the full moon was getting closer and closer and I was worried it may make them more nocturnal. I turned to Jamey, who was about ten foot to my right to make sure he had the camera on him and he nodded. I waited for what seemed like an eternity for the Bull to step into my lane, put the pin behind his shoulder (after I ranged him with my Range Snap of course) and squeezed the shot off. The arrow blew right through him and he only ran about thirty yards. He stood there still for a minute while all the cows settled back down, bedded, and expired all within view. I shot him in the evening and we waited until about dark to go get him. We decided to drive back to camp and get the tarp and lantern. We started cutting, skinning, and packing him out piece by piece with our frame packs. We didn’t even get the last piece of him back to the truck until 10:00am the next morning. That was a LONG night! He was a Mature Bull with good mass, 52” main beams, and a 46” inside spread. He is just really lacking on his lowers and left G5. I really like the way his left G3 is inline with his left dagger, that’s what sold me on him. It was a good hunt and what a rush when you see that possible shooter herd Bull coming into view while bugling and pushing cows. The only thing we could have hoped for is more hunting days with more action on video, but still turned out pretty good and have enough video to throw together my hunt. Yeah I will, I have another Elk hunt I need to finish editing that I had the privledge to help out on and film for and then I can start on this one. Still have a few more hunts to throw together just need to find the time. I'll post it up when finsihed. Is he from unit 27? I passedup a bull that looks just like him in 27 Yes he is.
