PSEps Report post Posted September 24, 2010 Here are the bulls we got this week here in NM. I shot my bull on monday around one. I was able to cut him off as he was headed up a ridge to a wallow. Two shots out of my x-force put him down. I shot low the first shot and the bull ran 5 more yards and gave me another shot at 58 yards. He ran 400 feet down a huge canyon and rolled about 30 feet down to the bottom. We quartered him out and packed him out. It was 7 hours from the time I shot him to the time we got him to the top where the rangers were. My dad shot his at a water hole the next evening. He shot the bull at 30 yards right before dark. We left the bull overnight (39 degrees) because he could hear the bull breathing an hour after the shot, and was worried about the shot. The next morning we went up and found him dead 40 yards from the tank with a liver shot. If we would have tried finding him that night he would have busted out of there and we would have lost him. Two other hunters in camp got shots but were unable to close the deal. We had a blast chasing bulls and just bein out there in elk country. Derek

huntswnm Report post Posted September 24, 2010 Good Job Derek! Did better than us. Super hot and dry where we were. Only one morning did the elk not go to their beds before sunrise. I had a chance at one, coming in hot, but circled down wind and busted me. Congrats again! jeff
PSEps Report post Posted September 24, 2010 Thanks everyone! And ya we had the same problem with the elk goiong to bed before the sun came up. The first day I got in the middle of 11 bulls, but they all hung up just a few yards out of range. Then the elk got smart and wouldn't come to calls really at all. I had an oppurtunity at an easy 360 bull, but he stopped at 30 yards behind a tree and hung up. He was a monster............ But we all had a blast chasing them and getting into the middle of the big herds. Glad to hear you had a good time up there. Derek
