Hoochie Mama

Recommended Posts

Silly not to have one? I think you might have taken that one step too far. I know of lots of guys that are straight elk killers that have probably never touched a hoochie mama. One of these guys NEVER cow calls! To back up what I'm saying, check out the Elk forums on Bowsite and look for a guy named Bigdan from Montana. He's got over 50 bull elk killed and killed 3 P&Y bulls on public land in one year, one of which was a giant AZ bull. I'd like to hear you tell Bigdan he's silly for not hooching with his track record and experience, and see what he has to say!

"I absolutely hate that stupid thing; I think It worked for about 15mins the first year it can out."

- 1

It's a good call and easily implemented into a caller's aresenal of calls. Not to have one would be silly IMHO. Overused by inexperienced callers? - YES!

I've got to reply to this. I'll agree that the Hoochie Mama is pretty bad. Although one time Lance and I were elk hunting in unit 8 a few years ago and after hearing a cow call, we looked at eachother, smiled and said "Hoochie Mama!" We stomped over in the direction and busted a cow out! HAHAHA! That said, I've always had the opposite experience.

Now, on to Bigdan. I had a discussion with Bigdan a while back on Bowsite. He was about as arrogant as anyone I've "met". Like I mentioned over there, he needs a big slice of humble pie (maybe the entire pie). People over there worship the ground he walks on. Why? Because he's killed a lot of elk, I guess. But when someone says "There aint no one who can bugle elk better than me..." I've got to question the person. And you notice that when he hi-jacks everyone's elk threads, he posts the disgrace of a picture of that giant AZ bull!?!? I cringe when I see it. It's an amazing representation of a 400" bull, not an amusement park ride- get off of it! How would everyone feel if I posted a picture of a big buck I shot in someone's success thread? That's Bigdan for ya.

Bigdan can probably call elk better than most, I'll give him that. But if I gave an elk tag from a few states annually into the hands of a few elk hunters Iknow, Bigdan would be put to shame. Would I care this much if he was some random OTHER hunter who has a few tags a year? Nope. It's his attitude that makes him a bonehead in my book.....

Hey Guys,

It's starting to feel like we're beating a dead horse here.

AZPredator,

That's a nice bull on your avatar! You obviously have some skills and knowledge about what we all love so much. I agree 100% that there are many tools in the toolbox and lots of ways to get it done. My point about Bigdan was not that he doesn't call, its that he doesn't cow call and certainly doesn't use a hoochie mama. He only bugles when he calls elk and he has over 50 bull elk harvested with a bow. I think that track record speaks for itself. To each his own. I'll stick by what I said when I mentioned that saying it's "silly" not to have a hoochie mama might be taking it too far.

Good luck this fall,

Nick

Heat - O.K. - I'll concede. I remove "silly" from my previous post. I never got to see your 'lope. You teased us on bowsite - where's the pics?

Tines - +1 totally agree about Dan's ego. I'd never share a camp with that guy no matter how many bulls he's taken.

So who else had their stalks blown by guys walking in with a Hoochie Mama? Three different times we were on a herd with great action, Lots of bugling, bulls fighting, it was great!! We passed several smaller bulls. Three if them at 25yds broadside but not the bulls we were looking for. I didn't have a tag, or it wold have been game on for me. Two of the smaller ones were small 6x6 about 300. I would have taken either of them in a heartbeat. Anyway, right when things looked like it was going to go our way, someone would start walking straight into the herd calling with a Hoochie Mama and bust em. Then as the herd is running away, they would go after them just wanking away on the call.... FRUSTRATING!!! And way to train them to be call shy...

I had to come home yesterday, but the guy I was hunting with is sill out till Thursday. I hope it's settles down during the week and some of these guys go home.

All in all I had a great time and saw a ton of elk. Lot's of bulls and some pretty good ones too. A couple of the herds we got into were big, and the fights were nothing short of awesome.

It's been good reading some of the success stories. Good to see some of you guy's got some good ones.

Hey Pat, we called in 2 bulls opening morning on one!! It is not our first choice but we had never tried one and gave it a shot. But then again we had some rythm in our calling and were not marching in on them LOL. After the heat wave came in and they shut up in our area I hit a tree stand and nailed one at 15 yards, 1st bull.

Hey Rich, long time... Congrats on your first bull, way to go!! No tag for me this year, I was just along for the hunt. I don't think it's a bad call, I actually have one and called in a few cows and a calf one day. I was just frustrated by all the clowns that kept busting the herd with them. I couldn't believe my eye's when some of them would bust the herd and continue calling as the elk were running away. All it take is a couple dummies to ruin a good thing. I think the downside is now anybody with $20 and a Walmart closeby will have one. I think next year will be worse.

Still got the crawler? I sold all my stuff at the end of last year. Needed $$ for a down on a house. I would like to build another one, but I'd rather go hunting a fishing these days.

If i had a ton of money, i would have shot 50bulls already..

Never used one, never will. I feel nothing works better than a diaphram or the Carlton fighting cow call. I am not saying it is a bad call, I am just comfortable with what I have and the success that has came with it.

Sold the crawler over a year ago and built up a decent 4runner like you did except I three linked the front with airshocks, hate the air shocks so Mike is building me a new housing and I have a set of King's for it now.

Blaming the hoochie mamma call on bad elk calling is like blaming a spoon for Rosie O'Donnell being fat! B)

Now someone finally made some sense. Just because someome might not know how to use it doesn't make it a bad call. It's just another call that has to be mastered and don't blame the call. :)

TJ

ps.....I personally like it myself.

LOL, like I said, I own one myself... I'm trying to bring a little attention to the fact that we now have a metric ton of inexperienced callers wanking away on the hoochie mama, and training the elk to RUN AWAY! I saw what I saw first hand... It was ridiculous!

I have been hunting this particular area since about 1978, and I have never seen anything even close to the clowns I got to see over the last two weekends. That's why I asked to see who else had the same experience. But then again, it's great when the elk are bugling, you find them easy. But so does everyone else.

I'm about done beating this horse, but my buddy that I was hunting with just called me. Today is the last day of the season, he found the herd and got set up in a good spot. He said the elk were moving towards him and getting close to shooting range. They just needed to clear a few trees when guess what happens...... The same jerk off clowns started calling and busted the herd again. After two weeks of doing the same thing, you would think they would start to figure it out.... Some people just ain't bright! What bummer! He is now headed back to camp to pack it up. Next time I guess...
