A bear and deer from 1940's-1950s

here is what he had to say about the first photo:

This is my uncle, Leroy Long, with his first buck. Mid-50's. Taken on 7 cross knoll in the taylor canyon area. That is yours truly behind him. I musta been about 4 or 5 months old. I had a beard by 6 months.

I think this is in 1946, taylor canyon, penaleno mt's (mt graham). My granddad, Skeeter Long, my aunt Georgetta and my uncle Leroy. Note the Montana grizzly trap on its foot. Also note my uncles red rider carbine and my grandad's old .30/30.

It has been sawed off to only 12 inches.

Great pictures Lark. Got to love Taylor Canyon even though it ain't what it used to be, over run with city slickers now.

 

I grew up a couple of cotton fields east of Skeeter Long's house and he was a legend when I was a kid. My parents used to drive by his house real slow so us kids could see if he had any varmints hanging.

 

What's up with the sawed off 30-30? You guys are some red neck sons of guns.

Those are great photos! My Father would allow me to come along sometimes when he visited Skeeter and Georgeta out by Big Lake in the Summer. They had an amazing set of stories to tell!

rednecks? that ain't right. we all have teeth, nobody's folks are related and nobody has any tatoos.

 

the rifle is an old model 94. it was made in 1895, the first year of the .30/30. Skeeter's brother, Earl, traded some ol' trapper out of it in the 30's and gave it to Skeeter. the barrel and magazine have been sawed off to 12 inches. only holds 3 in the tube. the forepiece and the butt have been shortened way up too. the hammer is filed way down. it's pretty unique. real handy to pack on a horse. scabbard ain't much bigger than a holster. winchester made a trapper model of the 92 and the 94. some of them had 12, 14 and 16 inch barrels. this isn't one of those. this is a total custom job. with a hacksaw, file and chisel. it has an octogan barrel too. cool old rifle. hard to shoot straight, but Skeeter was deadly with it. he only had 3 guns. that one, a colt woodsman .22 auto pistol and an old model '01 winchester .22 single shot his dad bought him when he was a kid. they're all 3 still around.

 

the rug from the bear is in the old pima museum. along with the same photo. the ford dealer in safford, hal shorbe, was delivering a new pickup to the ranch and went with them to check the trap and he shot the bear and had a rug made and gave it to skeeter. it was a cattle killer. there is another photo taken at the same time where Georgetta and Leroy were trying to plug their noses because of the stink from the dead cow and it looks like they are both pickin' their noses. i wish they'da took more photo's of dead animals. he was a predator getter deluxe. wolves, bears, lions, coyotes, bobcats. Lark.
