billrquimby Report post Posted October 1, 2005 Not so surprisingly I didn't draw an elk tag this year, but two friends did and I volunteered to help them out. I took them out for a quick look at some of my favorite spots the night before the season opened and found a good bull that we watched until dark. During the night, though, other hunters erected a tent camp on the edge of the meadow where we'd seen that bull. There were tents, trailers, and pickup campers at all of my other favorite spots, too. Why must people camp smack dab in the middle of where the elk are (or more correctly, used to be before they showed up)? Other deer may tolerate having people slamming doors, talking and laughing, building fires and cutting wood nearby, but elk surely do not. bowhunter4life Report post Posted October 1, 2005 that is becouse most people dont know they are doing it. they get a spot from a freind follow a map and stop when they think they are there.we never camp for elk with in 2 miles of were we plan to hunt. 111 Report post Posted October 2, 2005 Nothing against non-residents but a lot of them don't scout, show up to the unit the afternoon before the hunt and camp right in the middle of the best meadow in the unit. JVS Report post Posted October 2, 2005 The only thing worse is when someone pitches camp right in the middle of a two track. I've seen that more than once. Makes me feel like lighting some tents on fire . Many of the best meadows we have here in AZ have roads running to them or across them, etc, so it is hard not to have high traffic on meadows. I agree. Try to stay away from meadows while camping during a hunt. Also, something to mention while speaking of spooking game...G&F passed the law that restricts using a spotlight (I think 48 hours) prior to or during a big game hunt. .270 Report post Posted October 3, 2005 a two tracker, heck, a couple years ago some guys pitched a camp in the middle of the main road where we were pig hunting. i mean a busy, bladed, county maintained road with signs and culverts and all o' that stuff. had the tent pegged dead center in the road and a big ol' rock ring for their fire. they got all distressed when the back bumper o' my pickup accidently hooked one o' tent awning ropes and i accidently drug their tent about 50 feet down the road. i woulda drug it further but the dang thing hung up on the VW bus they had parked in the road using as a kitchen. it was sorta funny cuz there was a guy in it for a few yards, before he could jump out. this is a true story too. they got all yanked off and made some threats then the rancher came by and ran em the heck off. oh yeah, did i mention that where it was also happened to be where the road crossed private property? some folks are just born stupid and never get any better. as far as campin' in elk country, heck, elk are everwhere. move a half mile and they'll be there. but it is stupid to drive back in the middle of a good place and set up quarters. but ya see it all the time. probly just some flatlanders out for the weekend. bullwidgeon Report post Posted October 4, 2005 All those John Wayne elkhunters in that unit are constantly camping in the best rut meadows in the unit . Look out in the flats where elk do not belong and in the nasty breaks going down to them. Those ones usually go out there that way when the pressure builds, good luck. azhuntnut Report post Posted October 4, 2005 I wish camping was the only problem I had to deal with on my hunt. Two nights before opening morning some Jackass decided he was going to shoot about 80 rounds from his pistol at 8pm. There was a big bull hanging in the area, but never came back the entire time I was there. The day before my hunt he decided to practice during lunch hour. I am sure it was them *&^%$ animal activists trying to ruin everybodys hunt. Five years ago in 5bn they actually camped about 50 yards from us and played there guitar and drums until about 3:30 in the morning. We got up at 4am and I rode my quad right through there camp at 4:30. I was hoping that guitar was on the ground somewhere so I could run over it. AAAAAAhhhhh, now I feel much better.
