Two days left

Recommended Posts

Two days left to fill my Archery deer tag. I've got over 50hrs in the blind so far and have seen more does than I can shake a stick at. Hopefully with this warm weather and dry air the bucks are feeling thirsty tomorrow. I'll be out there til the end. Good luck to everyone else heading out. And good luck to the archery elk hunters.

I'm confused, If you were shooting an elk I would understand but to have an arrow with a broadhead not penetrate a 100 pound coues through the shoulder. What poundage and what arrow, broadhead are you shooting? Did you arrow bounce off or only stick a few inches in?

Thx!

Coues Buck Hunter,

I spotted and stalked a three point, and the attendant yearling bucks busted me at 23 - 30 yards. The buck came out, I lead him @ 2 inches, let the arrow fly, and the impact drew blood in the rear leg! In other words, either I screwed the shot, or the buck simply moved faster than I thought it could. Strongly,I think the buck jumped the string. I carry a Red Wing recurve.

I tracked the blood, after watching the animal move 80 yards, with binos,; going to put on my boots instead of walking the buck was a mistake. The first blood I found seemed clotted, and it tapered off with in 20 yards, fast. My arrow showed a little muscle, shallow penetration, and I looked @ 2hours. I figure the animal clotted up fine. At some point, I figured I was doing more harm than good, and left the area, happy to spot and stalk, and dissapointed at my low grade "buck fever."

Critiques welcome. What would you do? I made mistakes, such as not realizing the attedent bucks were closer than bino compression says ( bino compression hurt a buddy and I's fisrt stalk on Sat.). Secondly, I knew better than to releaseon a coues that is aware.

Floyd out

Keep hunting, keep enjoying.

Since you asked.... Never shoot a moving buck, your shot location details are typical of those kind of shots. I would suggest putting in a lot more hours looking for a buck that you've drawn blood on and possibly return to the area the next day and put in another sweep of the area. You might be surprised that even a bad shot puts the buck down but he just needs time. Check back in about 4 days later and look for yotes, ravens and work the wind to see if you can smell a rotting deer.

CMC,

thanks for the reply.

Reading my post this morning, I see I mislead about the leading.

I "lead" the deer even though he was stationary, as I thought he'd jump the string. He came out and then stopped.

Yes, I think looking this evening is a good idea.

Thanks again.

Sights or instinctive?

I'd head back and look some more also. I hit a forkhorm mulie a few years ago, before I went traditional. It was an uphill shot and I shot a bit low. The arrow hit his elbow and a rib, only got 3-4" of penetration. When tracking him an hour later the little bit of blood I found was dark and I found a 2" chunk of rib bone also. After jumping him out of his bed I found a little dark blood but that was it and as he bounced away he didn't appear to be hurt at all. I backed out and came back the next morning. He'd only went another 200 yards and bedded again. The arrow had punctured one lung and he'd expired sometime in the night. From his bed I'd jumped him out of until I found him there was no blood at all. I also know two guys who, for whatever reason, made a Texas heart shot on their deer. One deer ran less than 100 yards before bleeding out, the other went a ways further but eventually they found the buck. Theres a big artery that runs in the rump and even nicking it will cause the buck to bleed out in time.

Good luck finding the buck and good luck to everyone still hunting!

It was awful windy and a bit rainy today. Didn't see a single deer. Was lured off the mountain with an invite to go help on an archery elk hunt. So I guess I'll miss the last day after all. I should have been in the blind yesterday. Had no excuse not to go. Trail cam says the buck I was after was there around 8 am. I knew that was going to happen.

50+hrs is a lot of time in the blind but it always seems to work out that way!!!

Better luck next time Josh. Have fun on the elk hunt.

If you had been there he wouldn't have shown up. At least if it had been me. That guy Murphy has followed me on a lot of hunts lately. You've done the time so when you get him it will be that much more rewarding. Good luck on the elk hunts.
