BASS Report post Posted September 7, 2010 Whats everyone using for two way radios now? I had a set of the original Rhinos, I think they're the 110s. Since they were from the first year they launched they've since died. Are the newer ones still okay to use? Of course I know if I dropped the cash I could get a small HAM type radio with much better reception. I was looking at the Rhino 500 series (520 and 530) anyone familiar with these? I like the fact of the SD card slot with the map source programs.
Coach Report post Posted September 7, 2010 I've used the Rhinos, and I like the convenience of the combo GPS/radio, but I have to say the range is really not that good on the ones I used. Even compared to some older el-cheapo cobras. The Cobras had a much longer range.

I was hoping they had changed.
youngbuck Report post Posted September 7, 2010 seems like the 110 radio works better than 120 and 130s that I have, from what I've seen. My buddy has a pair of the high end 530HCX or what ever they are. They work great, They are awfully big and heavy though. Even for a techy guy like me, I think they do too much. Im not gonna drop that kind of cash on a radio, but I will use his . I do like the electronic compass feature of the 130s. Seems like in most places now we can get a little bit of cell service when our radios are too far to work well.
MangeyJoe Report post Posted September 9, 2010 I use motorola two way walkie talkies and they are really good to me. I used them for years and there still in untouched condition and claim to have a range of 24 miles. I used them in the desert and I could still communicate really clear from over ten miles away from each other., in desertous terrain!!

BASS Report post Posted September 10, 2010 Hmm, maybe I will give the Rhinos one more go. I really like the features of the 530, but I want to go hands on with one before I commit that kind of green to it. I know we bought a cheap set for a javilina hunt, and they didn't work from one ridge to another. Pissed me off as I could see the pigs just below my dad, but he couldn't see them. When he finally jumped them and got a shot off his pig ran straight towards me. I wanted to tell him to look for another one and I was going to put his down for my tag, but again we couldn't get a message across. I have a couple hunts coming up that I've been invited to come be a glasser for. If I spot a nice buck I want to be able to get a message across to the hunters to get over there! Thanks guy. Any more input is appricated
