MangeyJoe Report post Posted September 5, 2010 I own a Remington 700 .270 Win and I don't know much about scopes but I mostly vermint hunt but I also want to take out a lion before the new year. I wouldn't spend anymore than $350 on a new scope and it has to have a black finish. It currently have a factory Remington 3-9x40 that came off an older Remington ADL 700 in 22-250, and my sheriff friend who was the last owner replaced the bushnell I had on it. A scope is a scope in my opinion but am also considering keeping the 3-9x40 on it. Does anyone know if the factory remington scope is any good? Any recomendations on a scope? Are scopes made for specific calibers?
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted September 5, 2010 Try to find a Zeiss 3-9x40. FANTASTIC scope in the lower power end. The price can be found for close to what you are wanting to spend but maybe a few more bills. Also, 3.5-10x40 Leupolds are hard to beat. That is what my AR wears and I am very happy with it. Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 5, 2010 You mightconsider the Minox 3-9 http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/minox.pl?page=66000 John Barsness gives them high marks for sharpness, better than the Conquest and Leupold http://24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbth...3_9#Post4363285
Coach Report post Posted September 5, 2010 Vortex also offers several scopes in your price range that you might look at. Maybe a Viper 4-12 x 40, Vtex runs around $250 and the BDC reticle around $399. Doug's got 'em and he's great to work with. Plus it comes with the Vortex VIP warranty - which is a real plus. http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/vortex....texviper4-12x40
azslim Report post Posted September 5, 2010 Can you shoot good with the current scope? If yes then why replace it, 3-9x40 is good enough for 400 yd shots, lay prone, dial it up to 9 and squeeze. I have a couple hand-me-downs that have old glass on them that don't measure up to today's standards that have killed lots and lots of animals and will continue to in the future. If you do get a new scope get into a grade with a lifetime warranty.
youngbuck Report post Posted September 6, 2010 For the money i've liked cabelas alaskan guide, and nikon monarchs, lotsa good things said about doug at camerlandny's deal on vortex 6-20 viper. I know 2 guys who bought one. Only one looked through his he likes it. I may buy one even though i don't have anything to put it on. If you are gonna buy a new one, moe sure you wont be buyin another one in another year. That may take using our current rig unill you save up for what you want. When i was 19 i saved my pennies untill i could afford a swaro, glad i did. The last 5 years it has taken many animals.
Coach Report post Posted September 6, 2010 Forgot to mention this earlier. My top 2 shooting rifles have Cabela's Alaskan Guide scopes on them. One in 4-14 and the other in 6-20. The guns (both Savage) with these scopes will outshoot me any day. I'd love to see how these "economic" setups would perform against the pricier alternatives. My guess, is not 3 hunters out of 10 would shoot tighter groups out of a custom rifle. Only because I've seen super tight groups when I do my job and match the right load to the rifle. My Savage 10 American Classic in .300 WSM, shoots lazers with store-bought ammo. I'd love to see that rifle in the hands of a skilled long range shooter.
