.17 HMR VS. 22MAG

Recommended Posts

I have done a lot of thinking and reading and so on. I think the 17HMR is going to do it. DesertBull cleared it up even better with the forum he posted. I understand that it will make a messy shot. I think I will just take a few shots with it before and make sure I don?t miss the head shot. I was looking at a Savage Model 93R17-F. I did see firstcoueswas80's comment on him having one and that it was not that good. Was it the rifle or just 17hmr that you did not like? What model was it?

Ernesto, Thanks for the early B-day, ;) really appreciate it! What would I do with a yote, NO KEVIN I will not eat them. I don?t think anything eats those things. Serious, I have seen those things on the side of the road and nothing will come close to them. I will once in a while take a shot at one or two while they are on the run. I have a Winchester 30-30 B) to take care of them and any other mid to lager sized varmints. Now that?s a great GUN. It really isn?t a bad idea to take a yote for practice, I guess.

Now to JVS and Kevin?s comments :P , the first time I ate the Jack was in a ?Carne con Chile? burrito. I did not know that it was Jack rabbit. In fact I got seconds. Since then I wait till late October through new years and Knock me down a couple. firstcoueswas80, how do you cook them? Won?t mind trying something new!

And to all, it does not take a redneck to eat these Jacks. The Beaner enjoys them too!

Thank you Guys for the info really helped out on the Choice! :)

LOL! I have ate 'coon, frog legs, bullheads, carp and possum and drank sassafras tea. (back in my previous life as a 'neck).

Jacks in the crock pot are pretty good.

Have fun!

Ric,

I shoot a savage 93R17.

It likes the Federal V-MAX.

Groups 5 shots at 100yds. at just under 1 1/2 inches. Not bad for a fast little rimfire.

the rifle i had was the exact model you are looking at i belieb. wood stock and heavy barrel. it shot OK but thats it. i shot cci and federal out of it and it did like the federal better but not up to my standards, that is why i dont have it anymore. but my 22-250 i couldne be more happy with!

DesertBull brought up the barrell switching gun, I have a Rossi that switches from .22 to 20 guage, (for my kids). Very inexpensive, reasonably accurate and only takes about 30 seconds to switch barrells. I bought it at one of those gun shops in AJ out on Apache Trail. I would think if you are undecided between two calibers that may be the way to go.

I would personally go with the .17 HMR.

My brother has a Ruger 77/17 and with the Hornady V-max cartridges it will shoot right around 1/2 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards. We shot 4 consecutive 3 shot groups with it that were all less than 1/2 inch at 100 yards off a benchrest with sandbags, using a 3-9 variable scope set to 9 power. We shoot 20 ounce plastic coke bottles filled with water at 200 yards and once you find what the wind drift is, those bottles don't last long. The gun does not shoot the CCI cartridges as well and shoots 3 shot groups with those that are 1 1/4 inches at 100 yards.

As for performance on game, we have only used it to shoot rabbits, skunks, and foxes and it performs well on all of them. It easily shoots well enough to head shoot rabbits, as long as the shooter has a steady rest. I have not noticed it being a problem blowing up the opposite side on game, although inside the chest cavity is another story. I have found that on 75 yard or greater shots the bullet just enters a jackrabbit, fragments on the inside and never exits. Sometimes you get to the rabbit and can't even tell where it was hit, as there is only a tiny entrance hole in it.

I have the Savage .17HMR. it is one awesome little gun. Regardless of the gun you will want to tweak the trigger. The Marlin you can do yourself with a pen spring. I put the rifle basix sear in mine and it made all the difference.

You will want a high power scope. at least 10x.

The best source of info is Rimfirecentral.com lots of pros and cons for .17 v .22mag are discussed.

Good Luck

Dan
