couesdiehard Report post Posted September 22, 2005 Is bear still open while other big game hunts are going on? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> BASS, I believe you can still hunt bear during other seasons in the same unit. A couple of years ago I remember G&F removing the regulation that prevented you from hunting some big-game during the time that overlapped with another big-game hunt. Maybe another member remembers this old regulation and when it was rescinded. Lee
BASS Report post Posted September 22, 2005 I do think that one can't hunt archery deer while another hunt is going on, but I was confused with the bear regs. Somewhere on the G&F website it mentions that regulation, but I couldn't find if it had been removed or not. Thanks
couesdiehard Report post Posted September 22, 2005 It was 12-4-309 and I think it was removed for the 2003-2004 hunt season but that's the only regs hard-copy I don't have handy. 12-4-318 says that if you are participating in an "archery only" hunt you can only possess bow and arrow. But if you are not participating in the archery only deer hunt I don't see anything that would prevent the general season bear tag holder from hunting a unit while the archers are hunting deer. An interesting subject, I wonder if anybody else sees something that I am missing. Lee
Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted September 23, 2005 Yes there can be simultaneous hunts withing a specific unit(s).You can hunt bear with your rifle on a unit that has a big game hunt going on like couesdiehard mentioned;but remember if you have a archery only tag with you, you can't possess or carry a fire arm.Leave the archery only tag in your truck and then go and persue the bear with your rifle. CritterGitter Report post Posted September 23, 2005 Ernesto's got it right. You no longer have to have a permit for another species in order to hunt bear in the same unit, however the your choice of weapon must be the same. I can remember a few years back, a person could not hunt bear where an elk hunt was in progress etc. This is no longer the case. I called the G & F just the other day to ask that very same question. My problem is finding a bear. This is the first time I've really put in a considerable effort for bears, but for some reason am having trouble finding them.... at least in the pears. I have no idea how to hunt them other than glassing, but finding the right elevation is giving me fits. I'll keep trying.
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted September 23, 2005 I would try for acorns if you aren't seeing them in the pears. Oak trees and bushes are loaded with acorns this year and I have seen bear scat with lots of acorns in them. Deer are hitting them too of course. COUESAZ Report post Posted September 23, 2005 I was just getting ready to say what Amanda just did. If they come across them first they will fill up on them and not be down on the pears.
