bullwidgeon Report post Posted September 21, 2005 Allthough nothing like what I am sure some of you guys with good tags will bring in. It was definately a bull that needed shooting with the tag I had. We had 4 tags and shot two bulls. We hunted hard till the day before the season ended and never even saw another bull over 300 inches. The hunt was tough and I just plain old lucked into this one as he was bugling his head off and chasing cows around in the canyon behind the hill I climbed up on at first light to glass from on day 3. Finally around 7:30 AM he chased his cows out below me in a stalkable postition and I went down and shot him after following them through the cedars and playing tag with them for a half mile or so. I was relieved because on day 2 I walked over 10 miles and glassed literally a ton of country that used to hold lots of elk, but no more, I didn't even cut any real fresh sign out there. We killed this bull out of the same cow herd that we killed another 325 or so bull out of on opening day. I guess sometimes it pays to check back up on cows when the rut starts. Mr. Quimby shoot me an email at mattausb@wellsfargo.com and I can point you guys to where 7 bulls were runnning around Saturday afternoon. They were not awful far from where the last one you killed was at. I am not sure if your buddy will be too picky or not but the pickings out there are getting slim and one was a neat 5 x clubby looking droptine non-typical bull he might be happy with. The others were spikaroonies up to spindly raghorn looking 5x5's. As far as this one looking like a big unit 1 bull, I don't know about that, maybe with an Archery or November tag but man there are some whoppers running around unit 1 this year. I would think the guys with unit 1 Early Rifle Bull tags should be holding out a little this year . Heck, Lorace came over when we were skinning this one in the yard and told me that 10 of the 14 that came down through the neighborhood the other day and ate all the pear and apple trees were bigger than this one . I found no sheds, but my uncle found a nice big fat forky carp horn while I was wandering in the lifeless zone on Saturday. coues addict Report post Posted September 21, 2005 Bret Awesome bull. Man I think you did real good! I have a tag also this year, but I am really pressed for time. I hunted last weekend, had a shot opportunity on a smallish raghorn on opening day but decided to pass. I may regret it! I am not an experienced elk hunter, but I will get to hunt the last three and a half days. Bulls were only bugling for about an hour in the morning and that was all.They seem to bugle from around 9.00 p.m. untill 3.00 or 4.00 a.m. I saw three other six by six bulls but couldn`t make it happen. Maybe I can get lucky at the end of the season I hope.I am a nonresident and have only drawn two elk tags (including this one)since 1978 in Az. so I feel I have been waiting a while.
