CruiseforCoues Report post Posted August 9, 2010 I'm some what new to the site so forgive me if I dont give enought detail in my story. Last season I was fortunate to draw a tag with my brother in unit 31. We were no strangers to the unit because we both grew up on a ranch in the area and I have been hunting it for the last twelve or so years for Whitetail as well as Mule deer. When I got the news that we both drew for the same hunt even tho we had put in on seperate applications I was stoked because this would actually be the first time that we would be hunting together on the same hunt' so right away I had a plan to set cameras in a couple different areas to try and find him a decent buck because this was his first time ever to hunt Coues. Well after a few months of bad results on the camera I was very dissapointed because the biggest Buck on my camera was a spike that probably put up a mail box next to one of my cameras as much time he spent there . After shooting a decent buck there last year I thought for sure we would see more in that area boy was I wrong. Well October came and we didnt really have much of a plan other than to get up there day before the hunt set up camp and do some evening glassing. My father in law was going to come along I think he was more excited than we were he had not been hunting in about 5 years. Well opening morning came and we planned on hitting the near by water hole that I had seen a couple of bucks hanging around one was deffinetly 100" buck so we wanted to get out and see if we could find him unfortunately some other hunters had already made it there before us and we found that out by a single gun shot we heard right at day light it was the buck but a 14 yr old had got him as his first buck so it was cool. Not long after that we headed to another area I had known about as we came to the gate my brother got out of the Ranger to open it as I drove thru and stopped my father in law siad wait I think I saw something move so I quickly pulled up my glasses and there 124 yrds away was a doe with a buck about 75 yards behind her walking along the hill side I watched him for a few and noticed he was at least 80 to 85" buck and told my brother that if he wanted to take him to go ahead. He quickly got his rifle waited for him to quarter away, as I watched to make sure of the hit he pulled the trigger and made a perfect shot. As we waited to make sure the buck was down we did the whole Hi 5 and hug deal that all of us do the first time we see someone harvest there first Whitetail or any buck at that. We finally got to his deer to find out that not only was he a nice little 3 point but had a split eye guard as well which I thought was pretty dam cool for his first Coues. We took pics dressed him and headed back to camp to get him out of the heat and to plan on going back out for mine in the evening. So evening time comes and we head out to try and find me a buck that wouldnt take long not even a half mile from camp I was doing a quick scan of some hills and with in about 30 min I glassed up a 3 point that had alredy seen us but was trying to hide his head in an Ocotillio after watching him for a few min I decided that I would take him because he didnt look like he would be getting any bigger and it was still in the 90's and we were 3 and a half hrs from a paved rd so I ranged him just under 400 yds took my shot and put him down unfirtunatelly he started to leave and I hit him between the eye's and ruined his horns in fact i couldnt even find his left side but was able to pick up peices of the right side and put it togehter. All in all it was a great hunt and this year even tho I didnt get a tag my brother and his son have drawn the same tag this year my brother in October 1st hunt and my nephew the second I am just as excited for them as I would be for my self plus I get to use my new Swarovski 15x56. This is my Brother and his first Coues
tjhunt2 Report post Posted August 9, 2010 Thanks for the story and if you ever figure how to post pictures I would like to see them bucks. Good luck this year to your brother and his son. Not having a tag isn't all bad when you can actually be there to enjoy and help out. Keep us posted. TJ

CruiseforCoues Report post Posted August 11, 2010 Hey Ernesto yes I did hit him between the eyes but not by choice he turned just as I shot I had him quartering towards me just a little all I could see was his front right shoulder and thats the way he turned.
