ATV's

Does any one know the law or rules about placing the license plate on ATV's?

9 out 10 quads I see have no license plate on them,so do we suppose to put the license plate on our quads?

Thanks and God bless.

Always tell some one where you are going to hunt and when you plan to return. Provide them with a copy of the HUNTER ERMERGENCY INFORMATION located on page 37 of the hunting regs.

arizona dot has 2 different license plates you can apply for. 1 is used to prove ownership and the other is if you want to make it street legal by putting lights, a horn and rearview mirror on it. a lot of people don't register or have a title for there quads so they don't ever take it to motor vehicles. I don't know what the fine is for not having a plate on or if there even is a fine. I've never heard of anyone getting a fine that i know of that has a quad.

Like said above you have to have a off road plate for your atv. You should also pack a phot copy of the registration. The catch to everything is if you are on a maintained road or a numberd forest road you have to have your bike street leagle And plated and tagged as such. I was given a warning for all of those at one point or another by sherif deputies.

Ernesto, most of the forest roads up north Sitgreaves anyway requires quads to be street legal now. Forest service is really cracking down because the high volume of fast quads every where now in AZ.

Majority are not street legal.

They will ticket you.

The RV plate they give you when you buy them really means nothing.

MC plates are the way to go.

AzGuide... how did you get lucky enough to get off with a warning??? I was up at Jone's Crossing a few weeks ago and at the Long Valley Cafe there was one of those big traffic signs that they put the messages on saying that all off-road vehicles had to be licensed. I'm sure with that big of a sign they weren't planning on giving out any warnings. The best idea in my opinion is to go ahead and license your quad no matter where you plan on using it. Also, I have heard of people being ticketed for riding double and I've heard it's like 500 bucks or something like that. I wouldn't worry too much about that in more remote areas but you never know.

So that means that in order to get the "street legal" license plate I'm going have to put signal lights, mirror, horn, windshield and all that crap? Or can I just apply for the "street legal"license plate with out adding all those things?

I really appreciate all your support, take care and God bless.

You do not have to have a wind sheild. Just eye protection. You do not need signals at all. You will need a miror. They make them that fit right on your grip area. You need a horn. very easy to install. I think your plate has to have a light on it so it can be seen at night Very easy to install as well.

If you buy it from a shop you can tell them you want it street leagle and they will do all that. Or you can take it to one and they will do it as well. I have done two of them before and it is easy to do your self.

Just remember, you only need to license the ATV if you take it on level 3,4 & 5 forest raods, state, county, and city maintained roads. If you are on a level 2 forest road, you will not need the license.

You can get mirrors, horns, and most other things at a motorcycle store. I like using pressure switches that fit on to the banjo fitting for the brake lights. Heres where I buy my ATV stuff, especially batteries http://www.rockymountainatv.com/ . The newer Yamahas come with brakes lights already.
