MangeyJoe Report post Posted July 22, 2010 I'm planning on purchasing a Primo's Dead Dog Choke Tube for my Remington 870 12 Gauge and wanted to know if anyone has ever used the "dead coyote" choke tube and how well it has improved your shot? Can I still use regular nonsteel bird shot out of it with no problem? I'm ordering it soon so please comment back... I am going to primarily use it with buck shot (#4 buck shot to be exact) for predator hunting.
Hyperwrx Report post Posted July 22, 2010 I purchase a few Carlson chokes the other day and they can shoot all shot material through them. The Dead Coyote choke by Carlson is a tight choke that really only is beneficial at 35+ yards. It will told the pellet pattern in tight for quite some distance. One really needs to pattern a choke with your paticular shotgun and load to see how your results are. Not all shotguns pattern well with all chokes.
MangeyJoe Report post Posted July 22, 2010 Where did you purchase the carlson's choke?
Hyperwrx Report post Posted July 23, 2010 Bass Pro and Cabelas have them in stock typically. If not there are a myriad of places online that sell them but you'll pay a bit more for shipping.
thegunsmith2506 Report post Posted July 23, 2010 I really like my Dead Coyote choke. It shoots a lot better than the Dead Dog I tried, but all guns are different. If you look a few pages down, I posted some pattern testing I did a while back. Best thing you can do is buy it and try it out. If you can spare the extra cash, but 2 or 3 different tubes and try them all. Good Luck! BTW The Bargin Cave at Cabelas had a ton of tubes a few weeks ago. catclaw Report post Posted July 24, 2010 The extra tight chokes rarely work well with buckshot, even the smaller #4 shot. I have found the Patternmaster and Pure Gold to work best in my Benelli and primarily use the Pure Gold because I CAN shoot slugs with it-required for lions. If you check with folks who make tubes specifically for buckshot (deer hunters?) you will see they are not nearly as tight as like an extra full turkey choke. Then again, I don't care for the dead coyote loads themselves- I get far better patterns with the #2 and BB Hevishot.
sly Report post Posted July 25, 2010 I have a rem. 870 12 guage and use a mod. choke with dead coyote ammo and have killed coyotes out to 65 yards.
MangeyJoe Report post Posted July 25, 2010 Does it work with buck shot? I am planning on going coyote hunting on friday morning and am planning on waking up at 3 AM. What time can I Legally hunt for coyotes on AZ?
MangeyJoe Report post Posted July 25, 2010 I aalready bought the carlson's dead coyote choke tube and i thought it was for buck shot... What should I shoot out of it then? Birdshot? Its definately not made for slugs especially with a remington 870. I bought it for coyotes hunting obviously what should I shoot out of it to lay the smack down on a coyote? Hyperwrx Report post Posted July 25, 2010 Shoot #4 buck Coyotes can he harvested year around in AZ. Many hunters give the coyotes a break to raise their pups from April until October or September. Calling in and killing puppies is no great accomplishment in my opinion. They are too dumb to know any better and come running in with no care in the world to any call. I'd much rather wait a few months and have a worthy opponent. To each their own.
MangeyJoe Report post Posted July 25, 2010 of course not... i aim at males and adult ones
catclaw Report post Posted July 26, 2010 of course not... i aim at males and adult ones If you have to ask what time you can legally shoot coyotes in Arizona, you really think you can tell a male coyote from a female in the time it takes one to come into shotgun range and get killed? Do you let the females turn tail and run? How old are you??
Hyperwrx Report post Posted July 26, 2010 Its impossible to tell a male from a female when you are out calling. aside from gender specific behavior when they come in paired up and I am nowhere smart enough to understand that.
MangeyJoe Report post Posted July 27, 2010 I am 23. and i really can't tell but I use a female invitation and most of the time it's males showing up.I have shot females but I hate it because theres no way to avoid them obviously but is makes me mad to know that because of me this female can't repopulate. I have varmate hunted but never in the middle of summer.
MangeyJoe Report post Posted July 31, 2010 I purchased the Carlson's Dead Coyote and put it on my Remington 870 12 Gauge... It looks sexy on it and it is said to work great with water fowl, but you can't shoot steel out of it. I thought that steel is ideal for water fowl. I don't get it
