Drew The Wrong Tag?

Recommended Posts

I drew a tag that I did not put in for.....I made a photo copy of my application and the mistake was made by the Game and Fish (my application was typed so poor penmanship was not the issue)....I know mistakes happen...but what happens when I contact the Game and Fish?

My father-in-law received a cow tag last year he hadn't put in for. He didn't have any bonus points so he accepted the tag, but would have made a big deal about it if he had some BPs to lose.

I think if you went to the closest office they can pull a copy of your application. If its their mistake i would imagine they will give you your first choice.

Based on the random number that was assigned to your application, they should be able to determine if you would have drawn your actual choices, and if you would have drawn your first or second choice, they will probably award a tag to you. Even if you wouldn't have drawn your actual choice, they should restore your bonus points to you if you turn in the erroneous tag.

I had the same exact thing happen.....I plan on calling the AZGFD on Monday to see what can be done. If they are unwilling to give me a tag based on what was on my application, I'll simply settle for a refund. The thing I worry about is that all of my choices (the ones I actually put) were all December tags. They put me in for a Unit 22 October tag. Please keep us posted on how it turns out and I'll do the same.

AZBob, you described exactly what happened, I would not have drawn a tag anyways based on the random number.

I have not decided if I am going to keep the tag I got drawn for (unit 31 Nov 5) or return it for a refund/leftover.

What a surprise the draw was this year, when I found out the draw was out, I looked up on my phone and saw that I was successful, knowing that I only put in for primo hunts I figured I drew a good tag.......kind of funny when I asked a friend what hunt number 1106 was ......I was dumbfounded when told a Nov 5 tag...... first I thought he was messing with me......

Unit 31 is the Pinalenos (Mt. Graham). All the Safford area guys can tell you, there ain't no Coues in that country! Get a refund. Just kidding. ;)

It would be tough to give that one back for a refund and not hunt that country.

I hear ya Lee, having a tag in the hand is like having two in the bush....I am really having a tough time making a decision. With the lower tag numbers that the leftover units, it may be a good tag to keep.....

i think this happens quite a bit. i have a friend this year that got a cow elk tag and he didn't apply for any cow hunts. he had an archery bull tag last year so he didn't lose any bonus point and just kept it. luckily it was in a unit near where he lives. he called the azgfd and they said he could send it back if he wanted. i've known several guys over the years that have had it happen. i know a lotta other guys who said it happened but after a little research, they figger out they screwed up. like using year old regs for hunt numbers and stuff. Getting what you perceive to be the wrong tag can certainly be frustrating, but don't panic. First, verify that you truly have the right information (I mean you are referencing the right year's regulations), and then if you still believe the tag you were issued is in error, give us a call at the Phoenix office.

Call 602-942-3000 and ask to speak with someone in the Draw Section. They can pull your application up and determine if the tag in your hand was issued in error. If it was, it will take them a little while to research your random number and determine if you would have been drawn for your correct choice. If you would not have been drawn, you will probably be offered the choice of keeping the tag you were issued, or, if you would rather return it, having your bonus points restored. If your random number indicates that you would have been drawn for another hunt, then we need to determine if the issuance of another tag in the correct unit would cause any biological concern (and in most deer hunts this isn't much of an issue, although in a sheep hunt this may be a big issue). If it is no problem, then we may be able to issue that tag by following a simple administrative process. The folks in the Draw Section can walk you through the steps when you contact them.

Keep in mind, we generally have somewhere in the neighborhood of just over 100,000 applications that must be key entered, and mistakes are made. We will do everything within our power to make things right.

When the draw results came out last year, I was reviewing my kids draw results and was certain the Department had goofed by giving them deer tags in a unit I hadn't put them in for. After lamenting for about 20 minutes about the error, a coworker sat down at my desk and listened to me tell the story yet again. He then reached across my desk, flipped over the copy of the regs I was looking at, and said something like "You knuckle-headed moron, you are looking at last year's regulations. Good thing you don't work in Game Management."

I was sufficiently humiliated.

Give us a call if you think we made a mistake.
