azcoues Report post Posted September 9, 2005 A few months ago a friend of mine was involved in a gun accident with a 25.06 ruger rifle. He apparently put a 7mm-08 round into the chamber of the 25.06. Upon firing the gun exploded into his right eye, blew off his shoes and threw him back 10 feet. He has had 2 operations on his right eye and may not regain full vision. I under stand that a smaller bullet will blow through the barrel, but this bullet fit into the chamber and the bolt closed very easily. The bullet is now stuck half way down into the barrel and the gun is in pieces. I was wondering if this could be a liability issue considering the rifel was able to chamber a larger bullet with no problem?
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted September 9, 2005 Sorry to hear about your friend. What an awful accident and good reminder to make sure you use the right ammo. I don't believe there is any liability issue. You can chamber the wrong ammo in lots of guns and it's a common mistake leading to gun accidents. It's one of things stressed in hunter safety. I don't know if it is even possible to make guns so that they only accept the correct ammo?? Amanda
fatfootdoc Report post Posted September 9, 2005 unfortunately the liability issue lies with your friend, with him not checking his ammo. IT is a good example for all of us to remember to check our ammo. I reload a lot and it would be easy to grab the wrong bullet box. That is a hard lesson to learn. I hope your buddy is ok. Chef Report post Posted September 9, 2005 I don't see how the blame could be put on anyone but the person that chambered the wrong round. Sorry to hear about the accident. One always has to be extrta careful.
.270 Report post Posted September 9, 2005 a 7mm/08 is considerably shorter than a .25/'06. the case head is the same size. the shoulder of the case was way back from the shoulder of the chamber and the bullet was basically hanging out in the open air of the chamber. did i splain that right? anyway, makes sense to me. i witnessed a very similar incident once but luckily there was no eye injury. broken ear drum, messed up thumb and lotsa shrapnel. i ended up with the extractor off of a model 70 embedded in my left cheek. if you know anything about model 70's you know that that is a pretty substantial chunk o' iron. i wasn't shooting the gun, just in the vicinity. be carefull guys. bad things can happen when you're cranking things up to over 50,000 psi. when a rifle explodes you're probably seeing pressures in excess of 100,000 psi. too bad and i hope he gets well. losing an eye would be a bad deal. make sure of what you have in your rifle. as far as liability, the gun wasn't at fault. Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted September 9, 2005 I witness a similar situation once in a shoting range but this particular time the shooter put a 25-06 round in to his 30-06. The bullet only travel about 30 yards and every body was expecting the "hit" at 200 yards. This two guys had their remington ammo in the same table and only a couple of inches apart from each other so ......really easy to mix ammo because the ammo boxes are identicall. azcoues thanks for sharing this information because is like a "wake up" call to us and a reminder that we should always concentrate on what we are doing and be safe. I'll be praying for your friend,he will recover fully and will be able to enjoy the outdoors again and the name of Jesus.Amen. Thank you and God bless. Never climb a fence or tree,or jump a dicth or log with a loaded firearm.

cgmartin Report post Posted September 10, 2005 Who would be liable if i was to put diesel in my gas engine? i feel for your freind we all make misstakes but, those that we make are our own to pay for. i could see a problem if the ammo he got was miss marked. i really hope that your friend has a full recovery, that is horrible. blaserman Report post Posted September 11, 2005 Sorry to here this, don't need to happen to anyone. The 25/06 is a .257 dia and the 7 /08 is a .284 the 7mm is larger thats why the gun blew up 1/2 way down the barrel. Ruger had a law suit years ago thats why they put the warning on all their firearms now.
