Shiras Report post Posted September 6, 2005 Just curious to see if anyone has ever taken the North American "deer slam"... Whitetail Coues WT Columbian blacktail Sitka blacktail Rocky mountain mule deer Desert mule deer (I think thats all of them) What a feat that would be! Not to mention $ amount!!! It seems I read something of Chuck Adams completing this accomplishment several years back with bow, but I have a sneaking suspicion that that guy just MIGHT have access to the most premier hunting leases/land on the continent. I do believe above the elk slam (Tule, Roosevelt, Rocky mountain), Sheep (Desert, Rocky Mountain, Stone, and Dall) and Moose (Shiras, Canadian, and Alaskan/Yukon) and any others I may have forgotten.......the deer slam would be the one I would want the most. ----Just FYI, my aunt and uncle used to live in Wyoming. They took my sister and I on a road trip to who knows where, I was only 6). As my uncle stopped his Pontiac Bonneville (I believe it was), my uncle told me that that animal was a Shiras bull moose in the field beside us. It was the first big game animal that I ever layed eyes on (in '76). I have never forgotten that moment and how unbelievably big he was. For some reason I will always claim him as my favorite big game animal due to the memory I have attached to him. -Shiras
DEERSLAM Report post Posted September 6, 2005 Shiras, The "North American deer slam" has been a goal of mine since I was a kid, hence the handle I go by. As a matter of fact the license plate on my rig is DEERSLM. I knew the other slams were more than likely out of my reach financely and with proper planning and hard hunting the deer slam could be the one I could achieve. Now I have not ruled out the elk slam or the moose slam, I now believe these may be doable and the bonus and preferance points are building up for some of these animals so I have hope. Oh and by the way I need a Sitka blacktail to complete my DEERSLAM and it is just a matter of time
KGAINES Report post Posted September 6, 2005 Aren't tule only available to ca residents, but I think that the deer slam would be one of the most reasonable for someone to do, at least when it comes to cost. I think I read somewhere that coueshunter has the deer slam, maybe I read it in the coues book, I am sure he will answer and let us know for sure, I think somebody else on here mentioned that they had done it also. Good Luck to you guys on your quest.

DesertBull Report post Posted September 6, 2005 There are land owner tags in Cali for Tule. If ya got money to burn. Chuck Adams has taken P&Y animals of ALL NORTH AMERICAN big game animals, not just deer. He used to hold the P&Y World Record for Coues Deer, taken on the San Carlos. I wonder why they break blacktail and mule deer into to seperate catagories, but Whitetail deer, of which their are several different sub-species, are only catagorized as Coues and Whitetail? DEERSLAM Report post Posted September 6, 2005 I've seen the best landowner tags for tule get $10-12,000 SCI breaks down the whitetail into a number of different supspecies, northwestern, eastern, texas, southeastern, coues etc. The deer slam I believe is taken from the Boone & Crockett break down of the deer supspecies. I also believe the true deer slam does not split the mule deer into two seperate supspecies, rocky and desert.
Shiras Report post Posted September 6, 2005 You may be right about the desert and mountain. I just did a search and that's what the video they were selling said. http://www.identicards.com/products/videoindiv.asp?id=30 As far as Chuck Adams, you are right, not only did he get them all, but all are in P&Y. Geeez, poor guy. What's left in life? Sucks to be him....- -Shiras
DEERSLAM Report post Posted September 6, 2005 SCI considers a deer slam as taking any 4 out of the following supspecies- whitetail, coues whitetail, columbian blacktail, sitka blacktail, rocky mtn. mule deer and desert mule deer. The true deer slam as I have known it from much reading and working towards completing it consists of the whitetail, coues whitetail, columbian blacktail, sitka blacktail and mule deer. If anyone knows of a good sitka hunt, thats what I need
billrquimby Report post Posted September 6, 2005 I, too, need only a Sitka blacktail to collect all of the various types of North American deer that you are calling a "North American deer slam." Actually I'm nuts about all types of deer and have hunted them on six continents. I've taken five types of whitetails, Rocky Mountain and Asian elk, Alaska Yukon moose, caribou, desert and Rocky Mountain mule deer, Columbia black-tailed deer, Spanish red deer, European red deer, sika deer, fallow deer, axis deer, brocket deer and Siberian roe deer. Let the other guys spend their big bucks on beautiful but dumb ol' wild sheep. Even a retarded fallow deer is 100 times smarter than the smartest ram. First columbian blacktail in California. First big mule deer in Idaho. Hunted sitka blacktail on Admiralty Is. Alaska and unfortunatly struck out

I'm afraid a Sitka hunt is out of the question for me now. From all the things I've read and been told it is too physically demanding for this overweight 70-year-old cardiac cripple. Get a good one.
